Where can I get Fig Seeds?
Comments (15)LosLunas: No luck at Walmart, though a stocker said they did often have them. Gorgi, I don't think the seeds out of Newtons would germinate, having been baked. I have plenty of space and I thought I might try your dried fig experiment just for the devil of it if I could find dried figs. Tell us how you planted the seeds, how deep, what kind of planting medium, etc??? It would just be a "for the fun of it" experiment; I want to get trees that will bear soon with no fooling around so cuttings are as far as I can stretch it. I've got some figs on order now. Comments (7)It's kind of confusing how figs work. Here's a link to Ray Givan's website that explains it some more: http://www.raysfiginfo.com/figsex.html But yeah, persistent figs like Mission and most of the varieties that we grow will be able to set and ripen fruit even if the fruit has not been pollinated. That fruit even has seeds in it, but there are no fertilized embryos living in the seeds. They will never sprout and grow. Wikipedia states this about the term Parthenocarpy: "In botany and horticulture, parthenocarpy (literally meaning virgin fruit) is the natural or artificially induced production of fruit without fertilization of ovules." Comments (10)I would rather buy a known quantity. I mean why take years to grow who knows what when you can buy one of the best instead? You could plant 50 seeds and get 50 crappy figs trees or one good one and 49 crappy ones. Obviously this kind of growing is not for me. However doing this holds some fascination with some who have lots of land and time on their hands. In the time it takes to do I will have spent $ 15.00-25.00 on a tree that produces great tasting figs and it will be 6'-10' tall producing lots of great fruit. Or for the price of shipping I can get cuttings from UC Davis and grow out lots of trees of some of the best cultivars. Sorry for being such a killjoy but 75% true from seed is unheard of. Figs have been cultivated and cross pollinated for thousands of years in that part of the world. You have a similar chance of having giving birth to your identical twin. Have ten kids and tell me how many of them will look identical to you in every way? I bet its not 75%. Many of them will look somewhat like you but they won't look exactly like you. It does happen sometimes but its rare. Far fewer than 75%....See MoreExciting Surprise! but need help, any pros on starting fig seeds?
Comments (9)Thank you Frank! Yes, I did do some seaching on our forum. I know that there are chances that the seeds may not self pollinate, but I was wondering if maybe someone knew more of a ratio? I know that I have seen several fig varieties over at the figs4fun forum that were from seedlings, so I know that it is possible to get self-fruited varieties from seed. I know there is info on how to start seedlings too, but I was more interested in finding info that pertained to the germinating of aged seeds specifically. I guess I could try to find a site based on germination that may help? It is more so that it is such a "gold mine find" to me to find these seeds since the tree (and my Grandma) are both deceased. So I can only try to explain how it feels to find this, like as if you lost a loved one, and 20 years later, you found a long letter or video made by that loved one for you, that you never saw before. Almost like they have come back to life in a small way. So, to get something to germinate, even if not the exact fruit, would make me happy, to know that it at least was part of something that no longer exists. Again, thank you for the help!
