Dear Friends,

I know, that not everybody is so lucky to live in vaste areas, and could enjoy beautiful continental Cupressus plants.

This story tells a tale about the majestic Cedars of Lebanon. Up to z5, or even more (z4) they offer new sights in conifering. Cedars are more democratical with much more possibilities in reaching them for much more people. They are perfect survivors.

Some remarks to the cedars above. Toros (or Taurus) Mountains TUR Turkey over 3-5000 feet is a specially killer, vaste area. In winter becomes mainly snow while the european winter monsun comes. This is no water, just in April. After that comes 7 month dry and heat. The rocky slopes has no soil, the roots are seeking safety in the rocks deep. This means, this areas are wet only at snow melting, once a year. This is the secret of this lebanon cedars. Any place, what not so hard is, brings them possibility of a new life.

Breeder/Found 2009 Mesterházy Zsolt in the cemetery of Pécs HUN

Description Bright goldhaired prinzessin, the golden sport of a compacous blue-green Cedrus libani. I sent the photo to Edwin, who wrote back: you are very pleased (to find such like trees, 3 sports in one). If she keeps her colour later, I plant some in Castle Wartburg, Thüringia, Germany, where St. Elizabeth of Hungary lived after her marrige (13th century), and till now she has a great cult among the german friends there.

Anyway, royal names to royal plants.

Last, but not least a proved lebanon cedar from z5, with a possible outlook to z4 or even z3. I send any scions to conifer friend living in z4 and z3, or near to the deserts.

Cedrus libani ÂTûzföldÂ

Published 2010 Mesterházy in Conifer Treasury of Hungary 1.0

Breeder/Found 1985 bought as a seedling by Mesterházy Zsolt HUN

Introduced and named 2010 Mesterházy Pinetum, Erdõtarcsa HUN

Description A bright green, very hardy clone (-28-30C), grows 1 m or more a year. Incredible vigorous, no damage of frosts, needs very much place. DonÂt plant anything in 15-20 meters. Will be a king of any gardens up to z5 surely. Tûzföld means Tierra del Fuego at Cape Horn in southern Chile and Argentina, this one must be alive there too.

To compare: my Cedrus atlantica ÂGlauca trees are burning to brown or red of frosts in every five years. They renew just of the sleeping buds.
