Wispy Rays TET ffo ever

Small Tempest\TET ffo did not bloom last year,thrip damage

Swirling water\planted last spring ffo so exited about this one it is so pretty to me

Cerulean Star\DIP\ planted this spring ffo,pic does not do this one justice

Calgary Stampede ffo

Mine are all cheap ones but I still love them all.

Very nice ones Jill...I have no clue why I don't have Wispy Rays as of yet!!! I've had it on my list for a long time now.....note to myself "Get Wispy Rays" soon!! :)

I may try to hunt down the Calgary Stampede. I love the burst of yellow from the center. Almost like lines being drawn outward. Where did you get it, if its okay to ask?

I love the cheap ones as much as any expensive one I may buy. It's the flower that sells me. I have to do a double take on some prices of daylilies. I'm not ready for that big ticket item yet. Let me expert on my cheap ones :-).

Well, here we have the second seedling. Exotica x Lady Jane. Not really an improvement on either of the parents, sort of looks like a single Lady Jane. There are 3 flowers, the first two came out simultaneously and the 3 is much smaller copying Lady Jane's habit of displaying 2 flowers at a time. the scape is 9" so she takes after her father in all respects including the shorter scape. Oh, and as you can see, I was wrong, she wasn't a double. I'd rather a single than a partial double anyway so I really wasn't disappointed too much..I guess these two flowers were too similar to each other to come up with anything astounding but, maybe one of the other seedlings will look better. Not much difference regardless of what light I take her in, flash or no flash.. Donna

I think you are right Rita. After I purchased it is when I actually started inquiring about it to some northern growers and hybridizers. Many of them said it blooms ugly for them. Made me start 2nd guessing my purchase after I saw that 1st bloom. I can't use pollen from an ugly daylily. I have a bad habit of seeing something I like, buying it, then figuring out how to take care of them...lol Julia I hope your CE blooms improve for you. Glad to know I'm not the only one that looks at some of my purchases when they bloom and wonder what was I thinking. Also, glad to know that most daylilies grow out of their ugliness. Andrea

Michelia Figo blooming for 1st time

I'm really disapointed in my figo.... it has bloomed about 5 flowers now and the blooms do not open all the way, I thought it was really going to waft like a Michelia Alba, I can't smell it unless I put my nose down to it. Will things change? It still has lots of buds to bloom.

Yes, it looks worse on a trunk with boots. Another thing to consider is long term damage. Sabals can stand to have some fronds removed on occasion (naturally fires and hurricanes can cause this) but not long term. If they are constantly trimmed to that point, they develop weird trunks. The one in your pic is doing this right now. They constrict and expand, which makes them very prone to just snapping in high winds. Some faster palms can stand to be trimmed (not hurricane cut, but trimmed a little) in late spring, but sabals are very slow. The trimming also removes the plants food, as the leaves photosynthesize, which feeds the plant. Let's say you have 10 green fronds on your palm and you remove 1, you have just reduced the plants ability to produce food by 10%. Also, over trimming trees like coconuts reduces their cold hardiness, which is very bad in fringe areas like where I live, yet I see it all the time. I'll bet 100 times as many coconuts in my area have died from cold because someone trimmed them to the point of death before winter, than have died of LY here. Seriously, a bank by my house trimmed their coconuts so that only 5 fronds were remaining from what was once a full, healthy crown of some 30 fronds, and right when winter is starting! It is sure a shame. They might not die this winter if it isn't cold (we are experiencing cooler than normal temps, but the lowest we've seen so far was 39) but if we see a cold winter they will surely all die. Sorry for being so abrasive, and nothing against you, but the over trimming of palms is a big pet peeve of mine. They hire people to do a job that is actually very bad for the health of the plant.

I want to say it was rondas or hemnut from the LA.Both are great to buy from.So far everthing I have ordered from either has come up true to name.That makes me less worried about not getting what I ordered when I order from them.Had to wait a year to see some of them bloom.Another great one is algardengal.

I have a lot of the older ones too. Love the price and the blooms are just as pretty. I'm excited to see swirling waters, it's new to me this year and I hope it turns out as nice as yours. Love wispy rays! That one is going on my need to get list. My husband is into reds this year. C- star is a nice lavender. Another I would like to have. Nice pics thanks alot for sharing with us.

Hi Jill,

Your flowers and pics are really lovely. I've been trying to get Wispy Rays but every time I order it, they are sold out. I love Swirling Waters -- gotta get that one. I have Country Cavalier -- looks a lot like Small Tempest -- and it just lights up my garden.

About cheap plants: I have them growing side by side with very pricey ones. They are just as beautiful, and a lot less money.

Nancy, It took me till the 2nd time ordering from a different LA seller to get swirling waters. I have only had bad luck with one seller on LA and it was she sent me something else besides swirling water and I emailed her and she was supposed to send a replacement but never did. But I guess I am 1 of those customers you will only hear from twice then I just dont order from them anymore. It did not bloom till the following year so I could not email her about it till a year later. It took forever to get my order from her, had to have Mike handle the seller and she sent my order then one was wrong and there was no way for me to know till it bloomed.

Boy, I am glad Swirling Water is cheap, 'cause I want it and the purse strings are tight around here! :o) I love the white flowing edge. Been drooling over that Wispy Rays too... What a beauty it is!

The daylilies that we call 'cheap', sometimes are worth more in the garden setting than those that are 'cutting edge' and pricey. It seems to me that the 'cheap' ones are a lot more hardy, a lot LESS fussy, and seem to bloom no matter what. I love the oldies.

Lovely, Jill! Isn't this time of year fun? I saw Small Tempest in Houston and really liked it! I think that was the first time I became aware of it...I know you will enjoy it as it was just beautiful in a clump!

Very pretty photos - thanks for sharing them! Your Swirling Water looks a lot like Indian Giver to me - all the other photos of Swirling Water I've seen don't have a white edge. I had Indian Giver and it is a very pretty flower which increased quickly and rebloomed for me.
