Woohoo! 1st time bloom~ Oreocereus!
Comments (22)The one with red flowers is Matucana madisoniorum. The babies roll down the sides whenever the plant is moved, 2X/yr. This is one of 2 or 3 Matucanas here. They tend to have red flowers, and they sort of look like Cleistocactus samaipatanus or C. winteri. All the Cleistos are beautiful. The one with the red/lime green color scheme flower is probably my favorite plant. As I have downsized, I've kept most of the Cleistos (about 12-15 species). This is the other Matucana, M. tuberculata. got this one from Cactus Cowboy (WY) in 1997. This is the smaller of 2 bloom times. When they get out of the greenhouse and we get days of 90+, I get a few flowers. To get these to bloom well, I put them back into the greenhouse in early August and don't water them for a month. It gets 115+F in there, bakes everything. Then this one erupts with flowers. Here's my favorite Cleisto. Silverkelt - This is the second year for Astral Voyager in my garden. It is so well branched and budded this year that I'm very impressed with it. Comments (1)Do not cut the tops if you want the trees to get taller... that would create squat trees with little upper growth but more side branching habits. I would, in your shoes let them grow on, but look at th eventual shape of each one, as an individual, not part of a group.... You may want to think about different clipping techniques, such as Bonsai, Niwaki or plain trimmed canopy.... Look at each specimen, and decide what style you consider appropriate for IT. Then trim shoots or small branches accordingly, but I think you need to be patient, and let them grow on for a couple of years before making THAT decision. Unless you're a speciaist grower, with appropriate conditions, I would not try or attempt different growing conditions to 'accelerate' growth'. Done badly, that just leads to weak plants that in the end, will struggle once they are exposed to normalised conditions. This is why so many people buying plants from standard retailers (as opposed to nursery/garden specialist outlets) complain their plants struggle once exposed to natural conditions; because the plants have been grown, cultivated and prepared for aesthetic looks and desirable instant beauty. Not long-term durability and hardiness.......See Moredragonstone
