Far North rose growers, your help needed..

I'm orginially Russian who now lives in Richmond, Virginia. I grow roses (have about 200 right now).

My friend from Moscow (she is an editor of Garden Club magazine there) asked me to get information (translate it in Russian) and find pictures of different hardy Canadian roses (Eplorers, Parklands, new Aritsts series) for further use in an article.

A few vendors in Russia started to offer Canandian roses but information about them is non-existent. This winter was espesially cold in Russia - they had temps in -25..-35F for a long time, so there is a great interest in hardy roses.

Could anybody with experience with these roses give me your outlook on them and as a special favour I would kindly ask you to email a few pictures of your canadian roses with permission to use them in that magazine.

I understand that I'm asking a lot but still hope that somebody would help me.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Any detailed information that your friend might desire about them is available in a couple of government publications, that may still be in print:

Winter-hardy Roses: Explorer and Parkland Series; Agriculture and Agri-food Canada Publication 1922/E; 1996; a version of this that included the 'Prairie' series was still in print as late as 2004; and,

Winter-hardy Roses from Agriculture Canada; Agriculture Canada Publication 1891/E

Hello Marina,
The "Old Rose Nursery" has the Canadian hardiness zones for many of the roses he offers.
The Canadian hardiness zones differ a bit from the USDA hardiness zones.

I am in the Canadian zone 3b.

"John Cabot" has been in itÂs rather shady location for a number of years now and has performed well enough.

"Morden Sunrise" is new to me this year. I have been advised that without protection it dies back to the ground each winter. I have been very pleased with itÂs performance so far.

I have "Morden Ruby" but am thinking of removing it. The blooms on "Morden Ruby" tend to rot in damp weather. The bush itself has been very vigorous.

oh yeah i like Mrs Joseph Schwartz also, thats another rose i had my eye on along with Duchesse de Brabant,i just never concidered them for my shadier location. I went out and look at that area again and its getting about 3hrs of sun, and im hoping for something that will still flower good in that amount of sun.

Interesting how some things change while others stay the same. Avalon: My Vets Honor gets a fair amount of morning sun. I have to say that it is a heavy feeder and performs best when fertilized consistantly. Belinda's Dream is a work-horse in my garden where I have almost as many of it as I do of Elina. I recently purchased two Pope John Paul II after being pleasantly surprised by the growth of one that I ordered from J&P in the Fall on own-root. I was able to find it at a nursery in Miami. Appearantly a nursery up in Central Florida has begun to take up the slack left behind from MerryGro and is selling J&P roses on Fortuniana rootstock under the name of Armstrong Roses. I've spotted a few of these roses at my local Home Depot in Pembroke Pines. Well, bottom line, and a return from my tangent, PJP II is creating quiet a sensation in my garden. Peggy: My hat goes off to you. I can't get into OGRs. I can just imagine that they're huge in their pots. I was just up to the Cool Roses farm this weekend and Geoff echoed what has been a growing problem in my garden, regular thrips. He said that the weather is keeping the Chilli Thrips at bay but that the regular thrips are reaking havoc everywhere. I was warned against overly using ConserveSC and to stock up if I found any for sale as it has become restricted due to nurseries over-using it to combat Chilli Thrips. In other news: My raised beds project is 40% complete and coming along nicely. I hope to post pics some time in the future. Enjoy our Spring while it lasts Florida!!! Adrian.

Northeast 'no spray' rose growers - help narrow my list?

Well, I've revised my list. I've thought about the Austin Roses and I'm going to buy one from Pickering, and then wait to see them growing locally before deciding which others to choose. Pickering didnÃ¢ÂÂt have any others that I was looking for at this point any way. Munstead Wood Marie Pavie Aloha Boerner 'Tickled Pink' - the Peggy Rockefeller garden added this in 2013 I decided against The Fairy. And maybe Rosemary Harkness From Roses Unlimited Mystic Beauty Memorial Day Maybe Peach Drift Maybe Nahema Climber Palatine Twilight Zone a few others were sold out I really want to find Ã¢ÂÂFrancis MeillandÃ¢ÂÂ but I havenÃ¢ÂÂt seen it offered anywhere except Edmonds. In addition IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking about the Ã¢ÂÂEasy to LoveÃ¢ÂÂ group that Pat recommended. And I came across some new introductions for 2014 of the Ã¢ÂÂEasy EleganceÃ¢ÂÂ group of roses by Ping Lim that IÃ¢ÂÂm also very interested in. I see four local nurseries that should carry them next spring, so I am going to wait and try to choose which I like the best in the spring. I want to get something for my shadier and more difficult back garden but IÃ¢ÂÂm going to have to spend more time researching that, maybe on the Antiques forum. I love Nehema but having to figure out if I have somewhere to put another climber. I ended up with more pink then I wanted but other qualities outweighed the color. At least I should be getting a couple of dark ones. ItÃ¢ÂÂs been an education and I enjoyed hearing about everyone's roses, it was a big help, thanks! If you have a lot of green stems, I wouldn't prune anything below about knee high. As far as thrips go, they come from a long way from the garden. A drench wouldn't do much good and would harm all the good stuff in the soil. What I do to keep thrips at bay is when my buds start to show any color, I spray the roses with an insecticide every week for 3 weeks. This also kills all the good bugs that eat the bad bugs. So I also wash under under the foliage with a good shot from my garden hose (thumb over the end to create a good strong flow) to wash away any bad bugs at least once a week. This usually knocks down the thrips in the spring and I do the same thing in the fall to have clean blooms to finish out the rose season

I have tested almost all in Explorer and Parkland series -and they all perform very well in my cold climat.
UmeÃ¥ and LuleÃ¥ are nearest big towns.
I live 400 km south of polar circle.
-35 for long periods is not uncommon

The Parkland are a bit more sensitive to cold.
I recommend them all!
All my roses are on their own root.
