Ellie, don't feel too bad. Some of my first time blooms on my newer dl's are the same way. Nancy Billingslea bloomed today for the first time and is just plain ugly, as was Century Club and a few other ones. I think they'll be much better once they've settled in and this crazy weather we're having hasn't helped them either, this year.

Edward, you know, it mystifies me as to why some dls bloom the first time as they are supposed to look. Like the picture I posted of HBHMB. I know it will improve but all the makings are there at the first bloom. Then, I spend bucks on dls like Bird Talk, & Singular Sensation and they are ok in their own way but it takes forever for them to bloom true. I guess I really don't understand what goes on. The Fiery Moment actually had better color ( I thought ) than the pic that was posted on the LA from the seller. Oh well, I won't laugh at yours for sure. After all, I've been there and am doing that. Still in the process. Now, I wonder how Evelyn Kloeris will look. Still a bunch of new ones to get angry with...Good luck to you!!....Ellie

Hi Ellie,

Try sprinkling about 1/4 cup of epsom salt around the base of the flower, where the roots can absorb it as you water. The later blooms should start to show closer to the right color.

Tweety, There are so many problems with the blooms now. I had one bloom, that was supposed to be Chinese Watercolor. I have had it for years. It bloomed today and guess what,...it isn't. I know not what it is but it is going to the woods. Ugly!!!!! I guess I moved it ( CW ) somewhere and didn't mark it. Oh well, it wasn't that pretty anyway. This was my first oldie to bloom so I guess that is something even if it was UGLY!!!!!...Ellie

ROFL @ Ellie, yours look like some of mine. Then today I got up all excited to see new ones and two were named wrong ROFLMAO. Such is life in the world of flowers. It sure makes me wonder how in the world they got those magnificent flower pictures. Maybe they use paint brushes ha ha ha ha.
So now on top of watering, feeding, spraying etc etc I have to use Epsom salts. I'm tired just thinking about it all.

Dot, you are good for a chuckle for sure. I may just drink the epson salts and then it won't matter how they look. Maybe I can see them as they should be and not as they are. I can't wait for the next blooms. I am going to make a game of this!! I had considered that this may ot be SS but thought I would wait until next bloom to see. OH YES!!

I was truly rewarded when I waited for second blooms on Arctic Lace. I posted pics of this one earlier this Spring.

But!!Look at these pics. The first one is a picture of the plant "Essence of Royalty" that I purchased.

The second one is the fourth or fifth bloom on "Essence of Royalty" in my garden. Talk about a difference. I'm blaming it on being moved, cold weather, hot weather, and now cold nights. Hope I'm right and it makes a drastic change.

I can see some of the traits of the good one in the bad one, so there is hope, maybe next scape or next year!

Of course, as everyone knows, daylilies have to clump up a year or two most of the time. But, the descriptive word pink comes into play. When that word is used, then more than half will never live up to the hype. Just like "blue" is a stretch, pink can be as well. Try to find the word "clear" to go with colors, otherwise it can be peach, cream, or mud. Lavender is the same way.

My GS isn't blooming yet Dot. I don't think I even have a scape. The unknown one is weird looking. it may shape up to be wonderful though.

Wade, I have bought pinks that were terrific in color. Blue Pink Beauty is a very nice pink and I was pleased with the color at the first bloom. I think some folks enhance their pictures though.

Mona, I think yours is the right plant. It would look just as it should had the cold weather not gotten to it. That's the way Blissful Blackberry Pie did me last year. It did shape up at the END of the bloom season.

Dot, I gave the sick looking SS a dose of milk of magnesia. Not really but I did dose her with Epson Salts. She has lots more buds so I will be able to tell if it works.

Bird Talk has had it's last bloom unless it re blooms. Then I will know. I started another thread for bloom number 3....Ellie

Ellie..That looks exactly like the plant I received last fall from a LA seller...LOL... It was supposed to be Spiny Sea Urchin!!!! You and I both have a unknown.. I emailed the seller but I believe he is at Mecca. I paid a bit too much to have an unknown!

wow, those are some beautiful DL's.I love that last one.I am new to DL's,so will ask a dumb question.Can first blooms be a different color then what they suppose to be? I got a Bunny Puff which was suppose to be a pink and the blooms are a light yellow,,no pink. Maybe next blooms be pink?

Like I said in my post above, pink does not mean pink. Clear pink is pink. Sorry, the daylily business is not as straightforward and honest as it could be. Maybe your Bunny will get pinker, but true pinks are hard to select unless you have experience with buying daylilies. Bunny Puff is a cream with a pink blend. It is truly buyer beware.

Ellie your crazy weather and cold nights makes them act crazy, mine are doing much better since the weather has calmed down here.
Now the unknown pic above, I got that from the man that was selling out for health reasons, Kadesigns or something. I sent an email to ask what it might be and his son wrote me back saying his Dad is now in a rest home and he didn't know. I think it looks like Mildred Mitchell.

Juliet, that looks like classic thrip damage to me. Dot, it looks like MM to me too. A good one to use for my blue program! Get some of my pollen to dab on it.

Dot, I do believe you are right. It does look like MM. Lucky you to get a good one. Even if you didn't get what you wanted. I still would notify the seller though.

Juliet, that is a beautiful picture of SS. I don't think that's what I have though. I am gonna give her a little time then I will tell the seller about the problem.

mona, it really could be the dumb weather we are having but I think that Juliet may be right. Thrips have a way of distorting a bloom. BBP, looked like that last year as I said before but it was caused by the crazy weather as I didn't have thrips on her...you might want to take a look and spray her....Ellie

Mr Anderson was the seller that used Jimkadesigns. He is one of the most generous and kind people that I have had the pleasure to meet on the LA. He became unable to care for his plants last spring and his grandson was helping him to complete his orders that he sold and then to finish selling out all his stock. I bought from him for 2 years and never recieved a mislabeled daylily or seed. Once his health failed and he had to depend on someone else he had a few problems. I know him well enough to say that if he had known you had the wrong plant he would have given your money back immediately.

I once had a packaged lost in the mail from him that contained about 4 varieties. He in turn sent me about 15 different varieties to replace them even though I did not ask him too. Later he sent me another huge box of named daylilies free so I could improve my breeding stock. Last fall he offered to give me his greenhouse but due to the size and miles between us, I just couldn't get down to Louisana to get it but I wil always remember his kindness.

I've got 2 or three varities that look like "Essence of Royalty". They are all ones that I recieved this Spring so I just thought that it was moving or too cold problems. If it's thrips, do I need to do anything to them? I went to the AHS web site and read about them and found the treatment to be about what it is for aphids. I had aphids earlier but I bought some ladybugs to go along with the ones already had out there and now the aphids are long gone. I guess I can just wait to see if they put up more bloom stalks to see if they suffer the same fate or if they look normal??? I do not like to us sprays unless it's a case of use it or lose it. I have used soapy water in my greenhouse before, it works when I'm deligent about using it on aphids. None of the plants that I've had before this spring look like this. I guess that's a good sign??

Thank you all for your great input. I still have about 30 that haven't bloomed for me yet, so I may have more problems than this, I sure hope not. Sometimes I wonder when buying a seed or plants if someone could really scam us all but with God's Grace and some really great people, I've been very happy so far.

I bought a good bunch of ladybugs for aphids, they were really bad. But after about 2 days they all left home, I couldn't find but about 5 in the whole garden. But they must have done something because I just noticed today a plant that was bad again. I have a question, when you spray for rust does it kill the ladybugs because the Strike 50 sure does smell bad, thanks,

Mona normally thrip damage is only noticable on dark flowers. You never see the damage on the lighter blooms.

Dot we've never used Strike 50 but have never noticed a decline in ladybugs or praying mantis here when we did use fungicides.

Ellie....I know how you feel....this is Disgusting too.....Forestlake Ragamuffin...first two blooms...I think it forgot the Ragamuffin part....LOL What a DUD ...I sure hope it gets ALOT better....cause it can't get any worse....LOL

Rick, now I feel much better. At least mine has a nice edge. I have a scape on Tetra LBB that should be blooming soon. Also multipal scapes on Ballroom Waltz. BW has increased by about 5 fans..she likes me I just hope she likes to show off. I really am sorry about FR. I don't think I have scapes on that one yet but she bloomed last year and looked pretty reasonable on the first bloom. Then she showed off. I hope she gets well Rick. Be sure and post the next pic.

Mona, brooke is right. I think we do lose some ladybugs when we spray. I don't think the spray is SUPPOSED to hurt them but I think they leave. I think thrips are inside anyway. You can usually tell ( I do ) by a lumpy mass on the bud.. They are just really knobby. I would do the soap spray before the scapes rise then again when they are up. I am no master gardener but there are some on this forum that are. Maybe they can help.
