I don't know how cool the colorado rockies and other states within the range are, in the summer, (probably real, real hot) but a fella by the name of Jerry Morris found gobs of dwarfs which are sold at: Stanley and Sons Nursery (I don't know where else they are sold). You need to be a member of the American Conifer Society to purchase from them I'm told, but at minimum you can visit their web-site to see the selections. There must be 25 of them.

There isn't a lot of information available yet on flexilis/strobiformis (same) brooms/dwarfs etc- but certainly check the ACS Database for extra information.

strobiformis, or plants that are cultivated in the states as strobiformis, may actually be reflexa depending on who you ask. So I think Dax means strobiformis and reflexa are the same. Flexilis is a different albeit related species.

Although I do remember reading on this forum that at least one clone in the trade as flexilis (Vanderwolfs pyramid) is actually a reflexa clone.

As for your question I think limber pine (flexilis) would do fine in NM if you water it. Reflexa might be even better. I have a flexilis and reflexa and they are ok in central texas

Dax is right that they both must broom very often because the catalogs are full of dwarf and miniature selections. In addition to Stanley - arrowhead alpines lists several in their 2007 catalog.

Another picayune point - while some think that what is commonly referred to in the trade as strobiformis should be called reflexa - it doesn't follow to say that strobiformis is the same as reflexa.

In other words, reflexa is the proper name for those plants and strobiformis is the proper name for a different one in Mexico (and only mexico).

Also, Ronald Lanner recently commented on this forum that exactly which populations should be called strobiformis is a great big fuzzball or something if that helps:)

Addressing the original question, limber pine does not grow in what you would think of as hot areas. In both the Rockies and Great Basin it tends to be a mountaintop species in the south with its elevation decreasing northwards. In Arizona it is absent, but in its place is southwestern white pine, which grows both in mountaintop situations (for example, the Chiricahua Mts.) or in shaded canyons (as in the San Francisco Peaks).

That's what I thought Pinetree. Resin had said there is some 'latitudal' line or something like that, maybe it was Mexico - where although there are two botanical names given, the tree is the same.

If that's the case then my query would be what does the said 'latitudal' line demarcate? But that's neither here nor there.

getting back to the poster's question - 100F isn't that hot. I bet alot of the people in the midwest get highs in excess of 100, and the evenings in NM are probably much nicer. So like I said - my guess is that it would be fine with a little extra water.

Thanks for the discussion. I see these near my home in the Sandia Mountains on dry exposed cliff faces, but at 10000 feet. See this link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandia_Mountains - second pic. Limber pine grows on the crest of these mountains at 10000 feet. I was up there hiking today where it was 75 F but very sunny at that elevation (95 F in ABQ). I know some species can tolerate more heat than one would expect with good watering, so I am curious whether one has any experience with it in warmer than normal situations. Thanks!

I despise Pinus flexilis in my climate. Temps well into the 100's in our summers. It's a fungus magnet.

Vanderwolfs are fairly popular here in eastern WA where avg highs are in the mid 90's (35 C) and temperatures above 100 (40 C) not uncommon.

Our observation is that many of the higher altitude plants that are adapted to cool, but stressful environments can handle warm, dry temperatures. Alaskan yellow-cedar and bristle-cone pines are the most prominent cases.

Can't remember exactly what I said, but I don't think I said anything about 'latitudal' lines?? It'll all be there in the archives . . . try running the search.

I'm not trying to start some pedantic argument - I guess the only point I was trying to make was that previous posts, If I understand them correctly, have pointed out that there is confusion about whether certain plants should be called strobiformis or reflexa - But that I don't think that means they are synonyms. I think dax, if I understand him correctly, was suggesting that they were. If I'm wrong that's ok. Not the first time won't be the last.

BTW - I did see the 'latitudal' typo but didn't want to bust balls. I know latitudinal was intended. Now it occurs to me that it sounds like a new breed of dog. Like a labro-doodle. ROTFLMAO :)

My only question is if there is any evidence to support that Pinus strobiformis is genetically identical to Pinus flexilis.
