Tsuga mertensiana Photo Gallery 2010

A beautiful species, naturally a bit blue-grey and very slow growing compared to other hemlock. Beautiful in nature or in the small landscape, even the species should be planted if you can get away with it. Ignore the brutal 'mertinsiana' spelling, after all, I'm still just a young, learning collector.

Here's a few cultivars I've been lucky enough to get ahold of:

Tsuga mertensiana 'Bump's Blue'. A nice VERY blue compact plant. I believe it's a relatively narrow upright dwarfish tree.

'Sherwood Compact'. A nice compact shrub, though not as blue as others.

'Elizabeth'. A beautiful, spreading, mounding hemlock with exquisite color. Grows 3-5 inches a year.

'Blue Star'. A very very narrow upright spire, I've seen older specimens that are magical, maybe 10-12 feet tall and a foot or two wide. Striking blue as well.

'Mt. Arrowsmith'. A near-miniature cultivar, this small guy is in almost full shade and still a nice deep blue.

I have a cultivar with the name of 'Sherwood Dust'...
Is this possibly the same plant as your 'Sherwood Compact'?

Fotis, I think I speak for a great many people here and say I am envious of your surroundings, your climate and your gardens. Your color saturation is remarkable and absolutely lit off by those red rocks and your bed composition! I see you get significant snows, but knowing roughly the climate of Greece, I assume you get very long, warm, dry growing seasons as well? Sounds like a perfect environment for many conifers. Shot a few more photos today, particularly highlighting some of my golden pines - also for comparison of different cultivars and their brightness, at least in my mild Pacific Northwest climate. For referrence, so far this Winter, we've had a total of 6 days of 32(0'C) degree temps or below, 2 days in the teens and most days have been about 50/35(high/low). I believe this causes milder colors in general, but many of my plants are still full of color. Pinus strobus 'Louie' Pinus sylvestris 'Nisbet's gold' Pinus sylvestris 'Gold Medal' Pinus sylvestris 'Gold Coin' - lacking Winter sunlight, so not as bright as... Pinus sylvestris 'Gold Coin' - full sun. Pinus mugo 'Carstens' Picea orientalis 'Daureas' - Much brighter in Spring/Summer but still hues of gold left. Interesting because from collectors I've seen in the Midwest/East coast, this plant is often solid green by mid-Summer. Abies concolor 'Wintergold' Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Boyko's Sundown' Pinus mugo 'Yellowtip' Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' - Still the gold standard. Sciadopitys verticillata 'Ossorio Gold' - Roughly the same color all year. Just wanted to add this photo of a doug fir that colors like this each winter. Edwin, Nice finds. I particularly like the first selection. As to c.o Prostrata it has always confused me but I think ,oddly enough that the name is correct. I also have a Cedrus libani Aurea Prostrata that shoots up like a rocket. and of course there's Abies koreana Prostrata which is at best described as upright and mounding! None of this makes sense of course, but until I find otherwise I keep things named as I recieve them. This year I have found an unusual amount of sports on Chamaecyparis obtusa clones. Some are very interesting. As i have time I will photograph them and post them on this forum. John

Thanks Dave - I picked up a few design ideas at Glacier's End! Extremely rewarding getting the hard-scape in. Now the fun part is placement based off of color, form, texture, size, etc... that's where the real hard work comes in :>). Very nice selection of plants Stephen! Can you tell us the background info about the Picea abies 'Holey Family no. 1'? Is this a witches' broom or a seedling selection? How many more numbers are there from this serie? The true cultivar name for the Chamaecyparis laws. 'Nymph' is 'Ellwood's Nymph'. I think your Tsuga mert. 'Mountain Light' reverted for about 90%. Did you never consider to cut off the green parts? I found a simular variegation at my nursery which is more yellowish.

....I got this little 'Elizabeth' in spring this year.
Wish I had some of those other varieties -- and some Tsuga sieboldii too :O)

I don't know why they aren't grown more often. They seem naturally a bit dwarf and some of the cultivars are spectacularly beautiful with age. Do they grow well in most of the US?

Sam, show a pic if you can and we'll check it out.

Sounds similar but who knows.

The thing is that these are difficult to propagate.
Graftings only will take on Tsuga mertensiana understock.
Cuttings are also possible but they will grow very slow...

Dutch seedling selection found at the Von Gimborn Arboretum in 1965.
This group of 3 speciments are of the first one's which were propagated.

What would you say the age/height is of your plant, ClÃ©ment?

I have a photo somewhere of 'Elizabeth' taken at a visit from Coenosium Gardens. The plant is about 3'x4' with wonderful character and I'm guessing it's about 20 years old. I'll dig deeper for the photo.

Yes but by then I'll be old and happy and hopefully my house will be THOROUGHLY shaded by all my trees! lol

Clearly in that pic I posted you can see that there is room - as long as it's OK snuggling up with some cedrus miniatures(which will no doubt be 4'x4' by then as well.

In the picture ClÃ©ment shows us, the conifers are snuggled right up and the overall effect is breathtaking. This(and others similar to it) are the effect I desire.

Graftings on Tsuga canadensis can take for a while, but then you have to put the grafting union under the ground when planting these in the garden so it can grown on it's own made roots.
If the grafting union will stay above the ground, there's a very big chance that the plant will die some day...

Hey, Will. Finally got that picture of my Tsuga mertensiana, and it wasn't labeled 'Sherwood Dust' it was labeled "'Sherwood Dwf'"--"dwf" meaning "dwarf". However, my tree is developing a leader: Should I prune it out to keep the compact habit?
