Seems like the only place in a landscape in the entire world where a Leyland Cypress would be useful. ;-)

All kidding aside, if the winter isn't an issue for the light, Metasequoia glyptostroboides comes to mind. If winter is also an issue, have you thought about Pinus strobus?

Machine Gun Tom, strobus... I'd of never thought of that. I'm practically 40 years old and that, light, likely will never be removed. I definitely have hesitation that strobus would become airy and just my luck the light would have a spot to shine through permanently.

Jon, interesting, again, I'd of never thought of that either. I do have a 'Karl Fuchs' already, however there are other cultivars. I think ultimately those deodaras would put on 2/3 meter growth per year. Thank you.

Doug, Pinus koraiensis 'Avocadra' is now 8' tall here and it's growing basically 1' a year after having been in the ground 5.5 years. The prior years it grew 9" / 1/4 meter. They're beautiful and I only have one full-size of them but speed isn't going to match up to the GG's. I have 40 minutes from me the original 'Anna' which I could graft a huge whip of, but still I don't think any koraiensis will compete. If you ever want scions of 'Anna', I can clip as many as you would ever want.

Will, that may be it. Can you tell me how much new growth you can see over the years... I mean the most it's ever produced?

Dax,I don't know if you've had the experience of planting
for the express reason of blocking views(I expect you have)
but I have noticed that when doing so the eye seems to stop in the area of the new planting even when it(the new plant) doesn't
completely block out the undesired view.This will come across as either pop
psycology or a self-evident fact.I hope you plant the most
all-out gorgeous tree you can find and I'm guessing 12 or 15 years from now you may get more enjoyment from the results.Doug

Great point, I believe it. So far I'm leaning to 'Eisregen' deodara.

Maybe a Tulip Tree, Sycamore might work here.. If you plant it in just the right spot the trunk will eventually grow large enough to completely shield the security light.
Do you still have all those Bur Oak seedlings? Maybe one of those guys? Deodara would be cool too though.

Why don't you go over and talk to your neighbor?
I did with a neighbor of mine that lives about 450 ft. away. His mercury vapor light went in my bay windows and bounced around off mirrors and glass through half the house like a laser beam. Outside it was so bright to the eyes you couldn't see the ground. My property is a little lower than his. He switched to a soft yellow light with a hood and I planted evergreens. Life is good now.
You could also give him a tree and help him plant it where it would do the most good for you.

have you considered Douglas fir? they are the fastest growing conifers I have seen around here, at least when small (I see habitually small doug firs such as you canaan with a good 1.5 to 2 feet growth). But I might be wrong.
They certainly should be dense enough to ensure good protection from that light.

P.S. You canaan looks amazing! Do you have problems keeping deer off of them? I am mulling on including a canaan in my plan

Dax, Cupressus x leylandii will do the job.
It will grow very fast in hight as in width...

In four good growing years, from a two foot seedlingly mine has grown into a specimen roughly eight feet tall and it would be maybe seven feet wide if it had the chance. It's in an open spot with no sunlight competition and it's grown so much on the sides I've resorted to pruning rampant side branches.

I will mull this all over. I've almost made up mind on Eisregren, however.

Ludo- Douglas fir becomes very ratty with age in IL and IA. Coastal doug fir is impossible and Rocky Mountain doug fir is the ratty one because of humidity. Canaan is a wonderful that I grow many of.

Mike- our houses are even. My spot wouldn't be more than 30 feet in distance from where I'd plant a tree for him. I'll look at all angles to be sure. Thanks.

Dax, the 'Eisregen' has an open structure and will not take away the security light...

The leylandii is beautiful and will take that light away pretty soon.

I hear 'Gold Rider' is the hardiest. Is that true? Never have I seen a Cupressocyparis around my area. Suggestions of cultivars would be great.

Edwin is right about the open structure. How open when it grows large I don't know. Definitely a eye catcher and something I would still consider as opposed to something green growing there. This one has a beautiful powdery blue second flush in late summer.

My 'Eisregen'. A 1 footer shipped from Forest Farm in 2009 is now 13' tall x 6' wide. So if you want fast 12' in 4 -1/2 years...well you decide.

I do like Mikes advice to go talk to your neighbor. A softer less intense light and a hood will resolve the problem then you can plant what you want with an open growing structure or something blocking out all the elements.
