The Band Played On ......Picture anyone?

Hi guys and gals,

Wondering if any of you out there grow Stamile's The Band Played on? Do you have some pictures you could share and tell me how well it performs for you? I am in zone 5 and want to see if this plant is worth growing.

It recurves a lot, I had to take pictures early in the morning to catch it before it recurved. It was an average performer for me, with medium sized foliage. It was difficult for me to set pods on but the pollen was fertile.
Hope this helps some. It seems to be a good grower.

I have it, and I really like it. I can tell you that it will overwinter in a pot....seems I inadvertently forgot to get that one in the ground last fall. Oops. :)

Anyone experience weirdness on bands from Northland Rosarium?

Since they are bands, I presume they are own root? If they are grafted, that might be the problem, although they sound awfully young for root stock to be emerging already. If they are own root, maybe you got 2 roses in one pot (believe it or not, this has happened frequently). I would just plant them in a 1 gallon pot, and leave them there for 6 to 12 months, and see what they do. Some of my favorite roses we obtained either because an old root stock emerged (de la Grifferie, and also a marvelous pink rambler we think is Dawson's Apple Blossom), or because of a mistake by the nursery (I was sent Summertime when I had ordered Altissimo - Summertime's color goes MUCH better with the other roses in that bed, and has the same growth habit as Altissimo). So, I find it fun to wait and see what happens, although of course it is understandable that you want the rose(s) you actually ordered. Jackie

Thanks Glenn! I saw the plants you brought back from the show, very nice! , caught a bit of the J's myself-__- Penny, much thanks! Just to let you know, the photos above in thumbnails are from Rian's collection. He's some years ahead of me in this effort. Most of my babies (Mesembs, Aloes, Agave, Anacampseros, Avonia, Haworthia, Gasteria are not ready for sale yet, maybe next summer. I've also been propagating from leaves for a few years and have narrowed that down to the more select, less available plants. I've been preparing lots of those for local sale, just to get the ball rolling. Much of what I'm doing is practice and education, preparation for my future plans which I probably shouldn't discuss in this venue. The "Sea of Haworthia" is actually a shipment I received, planted very close together in a shallow tray. I did this only because I hadn't received my plastic pots yet. They plumped up a bit after planting but have only been that way for about 4 months. I'm sure they'll let me know when they want out! The M. crystallinum is one of my favorites.Those droplets are actually water cells that will break if touched. The flower buds have fat cells while the leaves have tiny ones. I got the seeds on Santa Cruz Island last Summer. They grew faster than any other Mesemb I planted. I'll post a link below to my thread from last summer about our island adventure. Charlee you find a friend or neighbour who has a scanner? Have it scanned in as high a quality as possible and burned to a CD. Or you could take the original photo to a quick print type store and have them scan it to a CD. Ask the price first of course. Last time I did that it was Canadian$8 for the first and a little les for any others. At those prices I quickly bought a scanner. Then someone could rework the photo for you with much better results.

I love this one, just got it last spring. It was still on Florida time but bloomed all summer. I'm in zone 5/6. I went to Stamile's and saw it and fell in love. I have not tried making any crosses yet. I wanted to let it settle in and get comfortable. There are two other pictures of it in this album.

Thanks you three. I broke down and bought it today at Floyd Cove. 3 huge fans to go home with me back to MI! I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't for your responses. Can't wait for it to bloom for me!

Congrats on your purchase, growgirl. Now, don't forget to PLANT it! In the GARDEN! LOL. And you might want to mulch it next winter as well. TBPO may well be hardy, as my plant seems to be, but why take a chance on it? I can assure you mine's not spending next winter in a pot. In fact, I'll be planting many of my southern ones next to a south-facing stucco wall, just for extra insurance.

I am gonna get that thing out of my carry on and straight to a pot it will go until I get new growth on it. This is the most expensive daylily I have EVER bought! I usually wait until the cultivars are around 3 years old so I can get feedback on how they do up north. I just collect them, not hybridize (maybe until now though!) So I don't mind getting them when they are a bit older. BUT, this one called my name and I couldn't go home without purchasing something. I will surely mulch this baby with lots of leaf mulch and see how well it does. The only other thing I managed to purchase was 4 seedlings from Phil Reilly's place. If I could have afforded more I would have gone crazy!
