Your tulips and primroses are lovely in your closeups. And I see the red primroses in the backround of the Trilliums. I like the garden shot best as I can see how your garden is laid out. Very nice.

First, thanks to all for all of the kind comments, folks! Maximus, to answer your questions, no the beds are not immaculate by a long shot!! I constantly do battle with the wild garlic, which seems to be the worst weed here. Have to use a long trowel and get the entire bulb out by hand, as nothing else seems to work. The garden actually looks pretty ratty right now but once it gets a new coat of mulch (which won't happen until next month, as I have to dig up a bunch of orders over the next few weeks and of course, plant all the new ones) it will look neater.I use hardwood mulch and it almost completely dissipates in a year's time. I edge all of the raised beds which don't have the edging with a square edged shovel(by far my favorite gardening tool). This happens several times a season - have already edged once this year and will do it again just before the garden is mulched. When these beds were started years ago, I hauled in tons( literally) of a topsoil- compost-soil conditioner mix to amend our red clay. That raised all the beds from around 6" to a foot in some places. The back of the garden (which you can't really see from the pictures) is edged with big rocks to hold the soil in place since the yard slopes towards the back. The worst problem I have here is with the robins ( in the spring) and the **&&^ squirrels ( all year) who pull the mulch out!And the *&&^ squirrels love to plant acorns from my neighbor's oak tree - ugh! I took early retirement from teaching three years ago - otherwise, I'd NEVER have the time to work outside in the spring like this! It is very difficult when you work full time. ( I was a band director and there would sometimes be weeks w/no chance to even walk in the garden.) So, time is a big factor, and I'm very lucky to be able to work in the garden for days on end.

Marg - Yes primroses do like part shade the best. They fry if they get too much sun. Mine come back every year after the winter is over. The leaves are visible and stay green throughout the winter season and when spring comes the leaves green up and a new growth of leaves come up through the middle. Most of mine only flower in spring but I do have a few that re-flower in Fall (my blue-purple one always does). They would be a perfect companion for hostas, in fact I actually have a few hostas in with 5 or 6 primroses in my back shade garden and they do very well there. I only know the name of one of the primroses in my pictures. The double pink one is called "Sue Jervis". I only know that as the people that lived here before left the tag. That white one you like and the red one are huge in size and look like they were part of the original plantings when the garden was first put in. I wish I knew the names of them so I could tell you but I'm pretty sure the red one is common. It's just a red single with a yellow centre and a white edging around the petals. I've seen a lot like this at many garden centres, even Walmart had them last summer. The white one is a double and I've never seen another one like it anywhere but I don't think it would be hard to get. I'd just ask for a double white primrose and this is the one you'll probably get. If you do decide to try them, I don't think you'll be disappointed! Jason

Beth, Thank you for the nice comments.I hope your bagged rose is Tiffany.These blooms this year are huge and a nice scent too. I am loving Double Knockout.Taking photos of it and just forgot about my other Knockout and its covered in blooms. Les: Thank you. Yes this Knock out really stands out.The blooms are pretty big,too and just a firey red.Too bad it doesn't have a fragrance. Aprille, Thank you.George Burns has decided to grow this year.I have never gotten more then just a couple blooms on it at a time,but now it has about a dozen blooms and some buds, too. I mixed up my own stuff and sprinkled around all the bushes about 6 weeks ago,and so far its working great.I think I need to soon mix up another batch of it and sprinkle around again,before I go out one day and have no buds or blooms left,oh and no leaves either.I have used the Liquid Fence before and it worked ok, but its expensive,and the stuff I used last year was expensive too,and my own stuff I mixed up,turned out to be twice as much for half the price. Thank you both very much for the compliment. Lilyfinch I don't remember when I planted most of my roses. I have 23 antique roses and some knockouts, but the oldest I have is Mrs BR Cant which I planted 8 years ago in the spring, I can't remember if Lamarque and Climbing Pinkie were planted the same year or the next. Once I planted my first 2-3 roses I was addicted and bought usually 3-4 roses every year, I haven't planted any new ones in the past 3 years as I just don't have the time to spend in my garden like I did. I have found my climate here (can't speak for anywhere else as this is the only place I have ever gardened before, but Noisettes (which originated here in Charleston), regular tea roses, China roses and hybrid musk roses tend to thrive quite well and can get quite large fairly quickly for some. Peggy Martin (I did a post on the antique rose forum about this fantastic rose) is a found rose so I don't know what background she has but she seriously thrives on neglect and I do very very little to her. She is believe it or not the youngest rose I have! I have a lot of heavy clay soil so working with it is back breaking and slow which is why I haven't added anymore roses as of recently. I have some roses that grow quicker than others and in my garden here are some of my slow growers; Madame Alfred Carrier is one that is always touch and go, Mrs Dudley Cross, Maggie (I threaten to dig her up every year but she is looking for promising this year so we shall see), Cornelia (another touch and go rose that I have threatened to shovel prune but keep giving her a chance and she too looks better this spring)...While Lamarque, The Charlestonian, Peggy Martin, Belinda (not to be confused with Belinda's Dream), Duchesse de Brabant are among the fastest growing then there's Mrs BR Cant who hardly did a thing the first three years and then took off into one monster of a rose. The rest seem to grow at a fairly normal rate. I had to laugh a bit at your saying hoping to stay long enough, I have wanted to move to a bigger home for awhile but my garden keeps me from doing so, I just can't leave her and anytime I tell someone we were thinking of moving they would gasp and say you can't leave your garden what about all the hard work you have done. My daughter laughes at me because in the winter I'm all about moving, that is till spring comes and I'm like I can never leave. Haha I think she right! But I would say in general it will take about 4 years to have them really start filling out again though it just all depends really in end on a particular rose. ;) So I didn't intend for this to be so long lol, but I hope that helps you some. Cracking - Yes those 2 raised beds were full of veggies when we moved here in 2009. I converted the left one to flowers right away and last year I planted veggies in the other one. The veggies did amazing but I am really not a vegetable gardener so I converted it to flowers too this year. It's more my thing. I have tomatoes (Tumbling Tom) in a hanging basket on my deck and also an herb pot with sage, rosemary, parsley, tyme and oregano in it. I'm happy with just having those so I can have more room for my flowers!

I love those red primroses. Your trilliums look so nice. I have a few of the red flowering trillium, 1 or 2 that are supposed to be white, but they don't bloom & aren't as big as yours. Hopefully, they will get there one day.

So nice to see the gardens. Your raised beds and the fence are so nice. I also love bleeding heart, my white one is not doing so well, while the others have taken off. Your primrose are wonderful.

You have a very pretty garden.Love the Red Tulips and the white ones is pretty too.The primroses are so pretty.I tried them once.They didnt do good here..I like the raised beds.Don't have to bend much for them.

Went to the corner store today and picked up a nice hanging basket full of bright pink petunia's for the iron hook in my front yard. While I was there I took a look at the other flowers they had and found a daylily I had to have. So now "Double Red Royal" is nicely planted in my garden. It has a scape so should flower at some point. Can't wait to see its double bloom! I also got confirmation that my daylily orders will be shipped out this week. I'm so excited to see which bonus plants I got. When they arrive, I'll be worse than a kid in a candy store!
