I grow these from seeds I get from Wildseed Farms. Honestly my current garden has no good place for them so they are pretty short lived. At my last garden they did well where there was excellent drainage and not great soil. That memory and the fact that they are pretty easy to grow from seed keeps me trying. I have about 2 dozen little babies I got from winter sowing and am planting them all around to see if they find a place they like.

i checked that link ais posted more and it says the l. perennis are indigenous to this county (wake). so, they should grow here. still no info on soil preferences, though i'd guess lean and sandy more than clay based. then i could only find one source of semi- affordable seed. everyone else sold it by the 1/4 pound and it's expensive- guess it's used as a wildflower more than anything. i would love to try it out if anyone found a good source. i have about 1/2 of a packet left of 'wild' lupines i got from pinetree that are the originals that the russels were bred from (they're not l. perennis). that's what i figured you were talking about earlier, and since the russels only do so-so, i figured they'd be about the same. they did squat last year. i'll soak them and scatter them out this year again to see if they do anything. with the lack of rain i'm not very optimistic, though. i may try a few as container winter sown, but since they dislike being transplanted, i'm a little leery.

Hi Stumpie, welcome to the Far North Forum! Last year a gardening friend from NS gave me a handful of Lupinus perennis Wild Nova Scotia Lupine seeds. They winter sow very well and they transplanted just fine from container to ground, mind you, you'll have to make sure to supply water till they take off on their own. We had plenty of rain last year so I only had to water them once after they were transplanted. With wintersowing, there's no soaking or nicking the seed. Winter Sowed March 03/05, Germinated April 6/05.

i went dove hunting last year. southeast of kingsville tx.behind the lodge was the chiltepin bush all aglow with it's green and orange and red delights. i picked about 30 pods and brought them home to dry. sept. 2011 to mar. 2012.planted them about 1/2" and watered good. least to say, now i have more peppers than i can ever eat. seems as though all sprouted. wow! i usually cut them open with latex gloves on and take out the seeds for next years rows of plantings. they are just hot enough for me to stand ,without adding the seeds to do damage. will later on warm up the vinagar and bottle them next seasons prolific growth. going back to texas this year and will look again . what a treat this is .
