I have had them sit a year before showing some signs of wanting to generate new growth.

Right now is not the time to replant anyway and your guarantee should be good for a year.

This is a game you need to be patient with and affording them enough time to acclimate and develop new root growth takes time.

my pines arent even done yet... so i would consider it still in the realm of too early to make decisions on any conifers ... unless they turn all brown in summer heat.. no use waiting on those ....

I more or less was trying to figure out if it hasn't pushed new growth by now its likely toast. The only plant that hasn't is a Bosnian Pine, but it looks like the needles are just starting to show.

I have the other Picea omorika on the side of the garage so I planned to take them in now just so I don't have to look at them.

I wouldn't plant anything again until Spring.

Unless this is just the nature of the beast where its stressed and it doesn't want to push new growth for some time and there is a chance it will bounce back just fine then I will definitely leave it.

On the flipside I hate to be sitting here next May waiting for new growth with the warranty clock ticking.

i have had leucodermis with buds like that .. sit there until the following spring ....

if the buds blacken.. or get mushy .... or the tree browns.. then it is gone.. otherwise.. leave it be ...

unless.. your psychosis will not allow such ... then.. get rid of it ... NOW!!!!

You are stressing over nothing.

Both conifers look healthy. Give them time to show their stuff.

In any event you are going to loose some especially in large garden with many transplants.

Leave the omorika out side on the North. Good air circulation and acclimating to their new micro-climate are a plus even if not in the ground. I would plant the rest when the leaves begin to fall. This helps them get established for the Spring push and be well equipped to deal with the summer.

Sorry guys, I'm fairly new to the confier game. I thought I read on this forum several times that if the Picea buds don't push by a certain time its toast, no?

I recall severnside (spelling?) asking about dormant buds. Is this one of the those cases? Could the nursery have sheared the new growth and the now exisitng buds are for next year? This plant has been in the ground since 1st week of April.

I posted the Bosnian pine as a frame of reference as to how far along everything else is. Although this is the last pine to push, no worries on this plant as Pines push throughout the month of June.

I have two Pinus nigra 'Black Prince' and one is light years ahead of the other. It had pushed new branches before the other had swelled it's candles. The other is coming along now but on it's own timescale completely. I have two Pinus mugo 'Benjamin' and one again is going great guns whilst the other is still thinking about whether to green it's candles but otherwise healthy looking.

Do you happen to have any Picea species that haven't pushed buds?

I actually have three Bosnian pines. One pushed candles weeks ago, the other just a couple weeks ago and the final and third one is pictured above. Those are pines though, I feel that they are all pushing candles yet.

Whaas, only my 'R.H Montgomery' has a patch where the buds didn't push, though the branch looks healthy.

In terms of your warranty, if that is the time constraint on you I would simply keep a photo record which you could show them to prove you waited/are waiting as long as was necessary to see the outcome. That's actually exercising a little faith in their product so they shouldn't say 'too late now'. Maybe tell them the situation as it is now so they know the conifer is on probation and if they're unhelpful then dump it back on them immediately.

It's just establishing roots. It'll push next year. Perfect specimens.

When (we) graft we see this behavior every year. More so, I planted a fir that looked just as healthy as your specimens and it waited 3-years and then it pushed.

Leave them alone, don't exercise a warranty however, photograph them, and forget about them for a full year (or more).

Now I know if the plant looks healthy and it hasn't pushed buds that it doesn't mean its toast.

Don't fret over lost plants. It's commonplace. No big deal go find another one that is better.
