Two Good Days in a row!

So sorry to hear about everyone's various bad days on the recent thread, but I was busy having a good new puppies day! Daisy had 5 pups on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. They are beautiful (in my eyes)! I was up all night helping her and she did a good job and is being a perfect mom. There are 3 girls and 4 boys and a variety of colours. Only the little red girl looks just like her daddy Spud.

Please pardon the unsavoury goo on the towel - it's nature.

The red one is Mona, the red & white is Maizie (I think Sharon has a Maizie dontcha Sharon?), and the black and tans are Beau, Luke, and Jackie. Of course just temporary names until they go to new homes. I will be selling them not before 9 weeks, Bassets do best when taken away a little older.

Oh, how wonderful. I was wondering if they had arrived yet.

My Katja had puppies - 9 of them. Of course, she was from the Humane Society, and we didn't know she was pregnant, let alone who the daddy was. No matter, they were beautiful pups and I really, really enjoyed the time we had with them. Two were kinda scrawny plus had a tough time competing for food, so I bought milk replacement and fed them extra. The neighbors saved newspapers for us (changed 3X/day) and we salvaged old carpet for the bottom of their area. DH built a pen that had a 2x4 separating the potty area from the carpeted area. Those little puppies figured it out some quick to hop the 2x4 to get their business done.

I think all dogs do better going to new homes at 9 weeks - lots of socialization skills are developed in that time. We held on to ours that long, too. But they do become a handful after about 5 weeks old, that's for sure.

Hope you have a lot of fun with them. Are they all spoken for already?

I like white with orange daylilies, sort of a creamsicle color scheme. I have planted white Annabelle hydrangeas and elderberries behind the old-style orange daylilies, and I think foamy white flowers or almost white in front would look great also. The annual candytuft, Alyssum, has white flowers. Perennials might include white campanulas, white liatris/gayfeather, some of the hardy geraniums or caryopteris snow fairy, white dicentra, white or creamy daffodils, white lilies. Since that particular variety of daylily has a relatively short bloom period, you want other flowers which will bloom for as long as you can get. I think you've got great other suggestions. Contrasting foliage (size, shape, and color) will add long-term interest. Flowers in the blue-purple range would be a fun combination. I also am thinking back to various warm colored borders that have been posted on here, with gold, yellow, and red along with orange - great combinations. I do know several gardeners who like pink and orange, but it's a bit intense for my taste. What do your inlaws like?

I think the reason your plants stop growing has more to do with short winter daylight than with temperature. All the cool weather crops I know are delighted to grow, without protection, in the 30-70 F range. Night time lows in the 30's shouldn't faze them unless freezing temps are accompanied by dessicating winds. If you're getting freezing winds, then I would consider using a row cover. The heavy row covers, with their added light barrier would seem counter-productive and unnecessary if your temps stay at or above freezing. Even in sunny California, the hours of daylight are greatly reduced between Holloween and Groundhog Day (the mid-points between Equinoxes and Winter Solstice). In your climate, cold hardy plants will still grow during that time but much slower. Once you notice this, you'll realize that Groundhog Day (Candlemas) is actually really significant for gardeners because that's the point when the rate at which the days get longer, accelerates. Plants respond accordingly with faster, noticable growth.

ggg -- We are in Macon, but we get up to Atlanta a couple of times a month. We will definitely check out the Glenwood Park project. I so-o-o-o-o understand how you feel about your drainage project taking forever. We just got our big patio built last year and I can't even WADE out there to get patio furniture put togther...OR plant anything, because it is so soggy and icky. Deep ruts from tractor tires that filled up with water over the winter and etc. And, our drainage guy actually is having trouble getting his on-foot crew out there to do his thing too. Sigh... pam 3 -- Yes, that's what I was sort of wondering if I could do...maybe put some large grasses or shrubs right around the start of it, to sort of "disguise" the fact that our newly installed drains are dropping off into it, etc? I will check out esh's link too. If we don't dry out pretty soon though, I won't be doing ANYTHING. Our friend with the tractor doesn't mind helping to dig, but at this point, he can't even drive the tractor OUT there to dig because it's such a sloppy mess. :( Your project sounds really nice. I hope ours lives up to the idea in my head!

My only concern is the amount of sun. Peonies,like Roses, bloom best with "full" sun. Tree peonies will do fine with less sun but the space looks a little cramped for them. Any herbaceous peonies are Ok. Work the soil up down to two feet and dig in lots of compost. Space your peonies four feet apart when planting to allow for air circulation and avoid disease problems as they fill the space. The one complaint with peonies is they do not rebloom, but do remain green and attractive through the summer. Plant them high enough so you can see the buds for next years growth through the winter. Too deep and they might not ever bloom. Depending on the plant you start with they may not bloom for a year or two, even if you do everything right. Al

We have a pair of pomeranians that we hope will breed early next year! I can't wait! Little pups are so wonderful.

Our vet freaked when we got our little girl at 6 weeks- we kind of rescued her though so it was a special situation. She had been untreated for a hurt leg for one week, so we bought her to take her to the vet-it was broken too! The vet eventually understood that, but was very cautious that the poor pup would not get hypoglycemic or cold etc. We got the male at 12 weeks from a breeder. When we do have pups, we will not let them go until at least 10 weeks! That's one thing the vet made sure we knew is that the smaller the dog, the longer they needed momma!

Thanks guys, I just love them to pieces. I wanted to wait one more heat to breed her (she's 1.5 years) but DH let Spuddy out with her whenever I wasn't looking so that was that. LOL.

Pudge, sounds like a good system you built. I haven't thought as far as potty yet. I was a bit panicked about the delivery because it was my first time and Daisy's too and I was reading up constantly in case anything went wrong. I freaked myself out reading all kinds of conflicting information but when the time came it all made sense and everything went fine. I have carpet under the box too, a length of rubber backed industrial mat. On top of that are old blankets and old towels that are changed 3x/day.

They are not specifically spoken for, but I have some people interested. My cousin wants one, and a friend is going to take one for a few days to see if she is allergic. She played with Spud & Daisy all day once and had no problems so she thinks she will be ok. DH wants to keep them all - yeah right DH!!

Vrie, around here lots of people think 6 weeks is plenty. I will definitely be hanging onto these guys for 9 weeks. When you breed your poms you have to keep us posted! I love little poms, they are so sweet. I guess you would have to do a fair bit of clipping/shaving when she gives birth. (Once again I thank my dogs for being short-haired, LOL)

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the second good day was I got seeeeeds in the mail! LOL thanks Sharon ;0)

And I meant 2 boy puppies, not 4, in case everyone was confused.

Glad to hear you got your seeds in Gil, how about giving me the lit' red & white Maizie for trade. LOL, just kidding, DH would kill me if I brought home another furry child.

They are soooo sweet, Gil. I love dogs and puppies of all kinds, but DH is not a "dog" person. Therefore, no dogs. Just our 2 cats. Funny, I wasn't a "cat" person but somehow we ended up with them. And now, they're my cats.

Congrats on your recent additions. Have fun and enjoy all the cuddles they are sure to bring.

Yes, Gil. I was just commenting to my DH that out of 5 puppies there were 3 girls and 4 boys. ???

Puppies are so much fun. We went to visit friends of ours near Carberry. Their 2 cockers had puppies. I brought my adult kids along and we played with their 15 puppies. Yes, 15.!!
