Identify the cypress, holiday photos etc.

Been on holiday in the national park Mljet, and island in Croatia. Absolute heaven on earth. I thought I'd borrow a cone and try growing something out of it as a souvenir but I don't know what I got and how I should proceed. Included are some photos to help you identify it. I think it's a cypress and I hope it's not another arizonica because I already got one.

The last photo is just an idea of what this place looks like. Those conifers are not cut but actually growing just above the lake surface. Beautiful!

Oops, I think those might be too small...

The last one, not the trees from which the cone was picked...

Primarily from the cones,it is not Arizona Cypress. It looks like wild Italian Cypress. Also has bark and greener color similar to what I would expect, but I am not well-versed in Italian Cypress. The Cupressus Conservation Project has a fairly detailed cone chart comparing cones of different cypress that should be helpful in identifying it.
I'm currently growing a wild Italian cypress derived from a tree I found in Balmorhea, Tx. Beautiful specimen.

That tree is absolutely cold hardy (even in VT) and while you need to compensate for the small pot, don't keep it inside - let it acclimate to the cold starting yesterday, in a much larger container of mulch, possibly in an unheated shed or porch. It won't survive indoors. It'll need a larger pot in spring so it has a chance to grow up (though dwarf varieties are slower than 'regular' types). it was just planted ... last season.. it has enough stress. .. they are conifers we treat them like conifers.. and if we want single leader plants that grow straight up.. we remove ALL DUPLICATE LEADERS ... and we do it with hand pruning shears.. NOT BASEBALL BATS ... there is a conifer forum .. though i care not where you post ... this is a highly hated tree.. for many reasons.. of which .. you are already experiencing some of the reasons ... one thing i will note.. where you see them grown to perfection.. there are usually professional gardeners taking care of them.. you better bone up on how to become a professional .... as i do not think that this will be a plant and forget situation ... and then you will have to figure out how to do it at 10 feet.. 20 feet.. 30 feet.. 40 feet .. 50 feet .. etc.. it is not within the capabilities of most of us w/o a very large checkbook ... i wish you all the luck in the world with them ... ken ps: and it says a lot that a professional gardener like botann got rid of his ... that is the decision of a man with 40 years experience.. or so.. lol ... Cindee, Indeed, Hungarian recipes. Cucumber Salad: Depending on your variety (I usually use the English Seedless Cucumbers that are individually wrapped. One cucumber is enough for four people, and you don't need to skin it.), you peel or if the skin is edible, then just thin slice your cucumbers and hint them with salt, then let them sit while you are preparing the bath for them. You take a glass of water and pour a small amount of vinegar in it, about 10/1 ratio, but depending on how sour you like your salads, you can make it more vinegary, then pour one or two table spoons of sugar in the mix and stir it until it is clear. Again, if you like it sweeter, you adjust the amount of sugar. If you want, you thin slice an onion and put them on the cucumber slices, then drench the whole thing with your bath so it fills every piece, then put the whole thing in the refridgerator till dinner is ready to be served, so it cools down. If you want to stir sour cream in, then you do it just before you are ready to serve. Take desired amount of the cucumber without the liquid, then simply mix in some sour cream, or just pour some on the top. Some people like to sprinkle paprika powder on it when served. Does this sound familiar? It goes well with stews, chicken paprikas, any kind of paprikas, meat dishes as a garnish. cucumber salad Cabbage and noodles: I still often prepare it. Slice a whole head of cabbage to very thin slices and brown them in butter or oil till the whole mass is glassy and soft. Add salt, and liberal amount of ground pepper. Be careful though, because pepper will make this dish spicy. Boil your water with some salt and toss some pasta in it that has a large surface to which the cabbage can stick to later when you mix them up. If you can find, buy square shaped, not too thin pasta. When it is done, drain off all the cooking water and either toss the cabbage over it or toss it over the cabbage and mix. That's all. Some mix cottage cheese, or sugar in it when they get their portion. You definitely don't need meat if you are having this for a dinner! cabbage and noodles (The pictures are borrowed. My experience with this conifer is it tends to have a wide girth. Growing in a pot...I don't know. Shearing to keep it in proportion with the container would eventually become necessary. This is a big conifer if allowed to free range. I realize grown in a pot would dwarf its size but how much? Another thought...dug up in the middle of Summer...maybe a 50% chance of survival depending on the size of the root ball and after care. Personally I would choose a better cultivar for container presentation and one grown in a pot for resale. Dave

Mediterranean Cypress Cupressus sempervirens. It is not native in the area, but commonly naturalised there.

The pines in the last pic are Aleppo Pine Pinus halepensis.

Basic question on my holiday souvenir: I got the seeds after I left the cone to open up for some three weeks, I've soaked them in water for 24 hours and are now in the fridge for another month, cold stratification and all.

Would you suggest I try and germinate them in potted soil end of September, beggining of October? What should I expect if I do so?

If I understod right you are speaking of Cupressus seeds, right? See the advice following the link below. You can sow anytime provided you will keep the seedlings frost free during the cold months, and if at 20ÃÂ° to add a growing lamp. But you will not be able to plant a Cupressus sempervirens outside in zone 6.

Question: is it the same tree on photo 2 and 3?

Same tree on photos 2 and 4, Mediterranean Cypress, yes.

That is a good website there. As for zones, I think it's possible as I've seen at least two of them outside where I live, I just didn't know these were Mediterranean ones before.

I will give it a go. 20 September I'll sow them in pots, germinated seeds or not as per that website, and see what happens.

As for zones, I think it's possible as I've seen at least two of them outside where I live.

Surprise! It is not hardy in Germany (with few exceptions), when most of the country is zone 7 and 6. Could you please post a photo of theses trees? And I am very curious to know in which region you are living. Origin of your seeds should be zone 9.

It is Aleppo Pine although I don't understand why there are two "p". In French : Pin d'Alep, and of course only one "p" in halepensis.

I'm in Skopje, Macedonia which is more or less in the Medditeranean region, some 200 km inland of Aegean and Adriatic/Ionian Sea.

If by origin of seeds you mean where I collected these, it's an island off the coast of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

I'll post the photos of the two cypresses tomorrow or the day after, now the light is not the best.

Now I understand better. According to my hardiness zone map of Europe, Skopje is in zone 7. And Southern Europe is surely better than Northern Europe.

The Syrian city (after which the pine is named) has always been Aleppo in English; "allepo" is just a spelling error.

What colour were the cypress seeds you got out of the cone?
