For their prices, I do think T&M can be a bit stingy with seed counts, but their selection is so fabulous, and customer service is great too - I probably finance their employees' summer vacations. I also assist Tiffy in doing the same with Gardens North - worth spending the money on! One place I've always gotten high seed counts - usually enough to trade many times over - is Swallowtail Gardens. And Pinetree Gardens usually packs a small seed pack (peas and beans excluded, you get lots of those) but adjusts their price to reflect that. The theory is most likely that the average suburban gardener doesn't need 100 of any one kind of marigold - so I order a lot from them, too. I've been tempted, but those seeds are so crazy expensive. Check out Schumacher's. (WWW.treeshrubseeds.com). You can order JM seeds from them according to laceleaf (or not), purple-leafed (or not), and a few other features. Trial seed packets are just $3.00, and come with plenty of seeds. Also, of course, many JMs will have ripened seeds on them at this time of year, and these are generally free for the taking. I have grown a packet of Schumacher's JM atropurpureum dissectum seeds, and there is quite a lot of varietion in the seedlings. The degree of filigree, of foliage color, and of fall foliage color varies the most, but nearly all were very cool plants. I was tempted to name and patent every one of them, but I don't think the world really needs more Japanese Maple cultivars unless they are significantly improved or different from past cultivars. Well, I went out there today for a break and as it turns out they aren't offering T & M seeds this year. I was directed to the rack of another company, new this year (for Molbak's) that had a lot of similar novelties. While there I was also informed that Territorial had pulled over 200 kinds from their wholesale availability and was offering them retail only, via their own web site.
