Starting our 4th page of pre-swaps...Wow! what a turnout.

Hope everyone is getting their pre-trades potted up to avoid the last minute rush.

Masking tape, sticky labels or plastic cuttlery make good objects to note the name of the plant as well as the recipient's name.

To re-iterate the details:

The swap is to be held in Appin on June 10th and 11am - ??? with hostess SIGNET and co-hostess Barb/KNOTTYCELTIC (me) on SIGNET's country property. There will be refreshments served and those who wish to bring something to throw on the BBQ, please feel free to bring them as well as any buns that you will need. SIGNET will provide condiments.

We ask that anyone who has not yet sent in a confirmation of attendance please do so ASAP so that we can get a good headcount for such things as refreshments etc... To confirm your attendance simply email me by clicking here and let me know if you are bringing

people with you so we have a good head count.

Those who are confirmed to attend will receive exact directions to SIGNET's home but it is very easy to find as she is on the main road straight through APPIN.

Please bring 1 lawnchair for each person attending.

SIGNET also lives very near to "HOSTA CHOICE GARDENS" just down the road from her and last year we all enjoyed a trip to the garden center as the swap wrapped up. The prices are a little higher than most centers but the quality, size and selection are exceptional and in my humble opinion, worth the extra bit of $$$.

GREYLADY / LOIS Thank you for the pink lily of the valley and the Boston Ivy Cuttings. I see you just listed some dianthus cheddar pinks, if you still have them available, I'd be very interested in those too! I'll bring you a pink peony (it's not super big, but healthy), and I think I can find some special cannas for you (I haven't finished my planting yet, but I'll see if maybe I could bring you a start of Pretoria (orange flowers with stripped leaves), Florence Vaughan (orange/yellow blooms, green leaves), and maybe Midnight Sun (black leaves orange flowers)

Shari, I don't have you down on my list for the Frans Hals and I should be good for jacks as I'm getting some from Heather ... if while weeding I do end up with any tiny pieces I will bring them to the swap though.

BLUEIRIS3 / HEATHER P. I'll bring you some of both old-fashioned blue bearded iris and rasberries. If you have a double white Datura I'd very much like it as I have only Double Yellow, Double Purple and Single White

Hi everyone , been busy working on gardens and suffering from what appears to be a chronic case of Poison ivy that keeps recurring for some reason. On my third dose of steroids for it . I hope that this course of steroids has finally controlled it! it has been brutal ! Otherwise I am gonna have to take up wrestling or something ! ( as they said on saturday night live " gonna Pump you up ! LoL ! ) Seriously though I have not been enjoying this spring all that much fighting with this poison ivy thing . Seemed to start shortly after the swap and has continued to this day ! Ross , if it ever stops raining and we get some blooms I will definitely share some pics but for right now we are in limbo between spring bloom and summer bloom ( usually lasts 10 or so days but this year is lasting much longer cuz we havent seen any sun ! ) I do have a curiousity question though please Ross. Do your lupins self seed? I have some bags of lupin seeds but have never successfully germinated any but if they self seed , then I will just scatter the seeds and hope for the best . I was also wondering after talking to a number of people at the swap , just how many of us that are avid gardeners are married to people who really arent interested in gardening . I thought to myself , how odd. I guess opposites really do attract . ( Interesting isnt it ?) I know my hubby could care less and just puts up with my compulsion to garden ! Signet

GREYLADY-GARDENER: I am not sure if I have enough japanese anemone 'Pamina' for you. I might be able to get you a tiny piece but I don't know if it is worth it. One of the people that wanted 'Pamina' hasn't confirmed this trade yet and hasn't been on here for 10 days now. If he is not coming for some reason any more, you can certainly have his, but I hold it for him until I know otherwise. Do you have pink single japanese anemone? I can't find a name for it right now. I could give you a much bigger piece of that if that is something you are interested in. Let me know what you would like to do. You can also wait until I hear from Capehlke. TRUE CONFESSIONS OF A PLANT AHOLIC OK Prairiemoon2 here is a slightly abbreviated list of what I brought home yesterday from Avant Gardens. Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Ceramic' A miniature Golden Hinoki Cypress. aka Golden Ceramic, and Lynns Golden. Tight undulating golden evergreen fronds slowly form a darling miniature sculpture. New! Chamaecyparis psifera 'Tsukumo' A miniature bun-shaped evergreen with fine textured fern-like blue-green foliage. Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu' This miniature evergreen reminds one of a sea urchin with its textural spiny green foliage. Slow-growing, it ultimately forms a 15' mound, and therefore is good in troughs.New! Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gold Fern' A unique form of Hinoki Cypress displaying golden fern-like juvenile foliage on a mounding compact shrub. We found the foliage color is best in part shade. Growth rate is slow, only 3" or so a year. Ultimately a shrub of 4' x 4' Ilex crenata 'Jersey Pinnacle' Valuable for it's upright, dense, yet irregularly branched habit and it's glossy dark green evergreen foliage. 6-8'. Magnolia grandiflora 'Edith Bogue' Considered the most cold hardy of the evergreen magnolias, 'Edith Bogue' has survived -24° F albeit with some defoliation. It has a tight pyramidal form, reaching 40' or more with a width of 15' and narrow, lustrous dark green leaves with brown undersides. In June and July, the creamy 9-12" blossoms fill the air with a sweet, lemony fragrance. Cunninghamia unicanaliculata- Known as Chinese Fir. Leaves are steele blue. Huge triangle leaves to 2 ½ inches long. Can take shade or full sun. This tree is in question by taxonomist. They believe it to be just a variation on the species cunninghamia. Zone 6 height and spread in ten years 12ft 8 ft. Acanthus spinosus Tha hardiest of the "Bear's Breaches", this bold accent plant has large shiny green thistle like foliage and 3' flower spikes with soft mauve blossoms. We have found that siting it in a well-drained protected spot and a winter mulch encourages blooming. Orostachys fimbriata A curiosity for the rock garden or troughs having narrow gray quilled succulent leaves with a purple flush. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Treasure Island A yellow, miniature, globe of Port Orford Cedar. Found as a sport from Treasure Very tight little ball with yellow foliage. Found in Southern Holland by Wiel Linssen. Height and spread in ten years 1ft by 1 ft zone 5 part shade. Chamaecyparis obtuse Golden Sprite a miniature bun form of Hinoki Cypress with tiny golden yellow leaves on twisted stems. Height and spread in ten years 4" x 1 Chamaecyparis obtuse Emelie a miniature variety of Jap. Hinoki Cypress. Nice green foliage on a small bun shaped plant. Propogates well and looks great. Plant named in 2005 in loving memorie of Emelie Snyder, wife of Marvin Snyder ex-president of American Conifer Society. Height and spread in 10 years 10inches by 10 inches. Chamaecyparis obtuse Leperchaun A miniature variety of Jap Hinoki. Leaves emerald green and very small. Plant is a squatty conical form. Leaves have a tuft appearance. Plant found and introduced by JW Spingarn of Long Island NY. Height and spread in 10 years 1ft x 14 inches zone 5 The beginnings of a tender succulent collection that I wont embarrass my self further by listing. kt

Vee, my high school had about a thousand students and probably close to one hundred teachers (not counting support staff). Using English as an example, there was at least one teacher for every grade level, thus I had a different English teacher every year. One year I actually had two: the one who taught grammar and composition during the fall term, and the one who taught literature in the spring term. Btw, that sequence -- grammar in the fall, literature in the spring -- held through all of my four years of English. Donnamira, I loved diagramming sentences! I wonder why it was discontinued, as it seemed to me to be a wonderful way to learn the structure of English. I can relate to your experience of understanding a limit in trig! Those breakthroughs were always worth much more than the price of tuition, I think. You had a lot more exams than I remember taking. I don't think we had anything like your Regents exam. We took the Iowa Achievement Test every year from about third grade; but as it was supposed to be an assessment of how much we had already learned, we were not drilled on what we could expect to appear in it. And I never studied specifically for it -- I don't think anyone did. Neither did I cram, as so many students later have done, to take the ACT and/or SAT. I took both, very casually. Vee, I don't recall my schedules of classes, but I think we had each subject daily much the same as Kath and Donnamira did. I didn't have "blocks" before college. High school began at 8 a.m. and let out at 3.45 p.m. We had seven class periods and lunch between those times. We were discouraged from talking, as well, especially during class. I'm always surprised to hear the din in modern classrooms.

Ok , everyone, time is winding down to the swap , so I would like to ask everyone who needs directions to my place ( the swap ) to email me and I will give you my address, phone number and directions on how to get to my place.

I want to thank everyone for the enthusiasm that they have shown in doing the pretrades and you can continue to the last minute of course . Dont forget your extra items for the gambler's circle ....this is almost like a treasure hunt cuz you just never know what little gem might be waiting in the gambler's circle ! LOL!

I am looking forward to seeing you all again and for the newbies to the swap , I am looking forward to meeting you all for the first time .

GREYLADY: Confirming the new request for Disco Orange Marigolds. Some "Grape Hyacinth Bulbs" would be great in exchange. No need to pot them, just put them in a paper bag if you like.

SHARRI: Confirming the new request for Mystery Seedlings. No trade necessary.

NYSSAMAN: Confirming new request for Pale Corydalis seedlings. If memory serves me (sometimes it doesn't Jeff so don't quote me...but) I think Pale Corydalis behaves a lot like most Columbines..short lived and depends on self seeding to continue. So far mine have survived 2 summers and the size is better the second season for sure. The colour is always spectacular misty green with the pink and yellow flowers. It is a prolific seeder with seeds very similar in size and appearance to columbine as well).

If by chance a tiny little piece of tuber falls off the daylily "anzac" while you are digging it up, could I possibly have it? Not sure if there is anything on my list that you would like but if there is anything that you are looking for, just ask...I might have it.

You are welcome for the pinks. They are kind of difficult to dig up and pot.....always hard to know if you get the proper roots, but I know that they root very nicely even if they don't look like they have any on them. I used some MYKE in the pots to ensure a good start just in case I didn't get enough roots, but I would like you to pick something else from my list too.(in addition to the pinks)

I checked out the perennial candytuft and only had the one decent sized plant that was already promised to someone. I did find two tiny seedlings, both about 1 or 2 inches tall and single stems. I will pot them up for you, but you can also pick something else (in addition to the tiny seedlings)from my "still available" list, which is a couple of posts up. Let me know.

Thanks so much for the scarlet flowering quince and the spice bush!
Would you be interested in a cuphea ignea/cigarette seedling? or a hoya? or some datura seedlings? or some red flowered, green leaved canna rhizomes? Texas sage/salvia coccinea (a hummingbird magnet)? I can try planting some Christmas cactus cuttings, but I won't know if they are successful by Sunday... If none of these are of interest please let me know what sort of tropical you are looking for and I'll see what I can trade for locally.

Sorry I am out of purple black/white columbine. For your mom you asked mini tan iris and purple with white columbine. I can bring those. Could it be possible to get 4 more tiger lilies for these?
