Well, if there are any local daylily growers, I'd get it there because otherwise shipping will cost more than the daylily. Red Volunteer should be easy to find locally.
For instance, "Aren't I Pretty" daylilies sells it for $6, but shipping costs $10!

True about shipping.Local garden centers and big box chains are a sure bet.Take a look at some reds on this site to familiarize yourself with them so you can get what you are looking for.

Sue I have to agree that photo of Red Volunteer is heart stopping BEAUTIFUL. I am hungrier than ever for some red DL. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

Red Volunteer is great, but Red Monarch is absolutely fastastic. It is a real tall one with a 7" bloom and great budding/branching. Blooms over a longer period than Red Volunteer but both are wonderful and in the $5 range.

I forgot to mention - if you are planning to buy several double-fan plants, the shipping charges are usually just a dollar more for each additional plant. For instance, at the "Aren't I Pretty Daylilies" online store, after the $10 charge for the first plant, each additional plant is $1 shipping for each. And with gas prices the way they are, maybe running around locally to find & buy the plants would cost as much in gasoline!!! Sue

I bought quite a few red daylilies from Tranquil Lake Nursery.

Aren't I Pretty and Sunset Meadow daylily gardens have reasonably priced ones, and are good people to do business with, too.

Does anyone know if Red Volunteer will thrive in Zone 8b? I've been wanting that one myself, but it is dormant. I'm not sure if it will make it down here in this Texas weather.

RED VOLUNTEER does well for me in our Georgia heat Nancy.. you probably get a bit hotter..but it might be worth a try.

My personal preference is for many pinks, some clear yellows, melon shades, ivory, purples, etc.

Ya'll are keelin' me. I love em all. So far every suggestion. I cannot decide! Going to check locally first maybe I will get lucky and find what I am looking for. If not I will let you all know that suggested a source. Thanks! for making it tuff tee hee

Red Volunteer does very well for me here in 9a and I'm sure would do well in 7b. Hunter's Torch, Spacecoast Hot Topic, Chinese Scholar, Pardon Me, Ming Toy and Forever Red would also be good choices.

Have you looked at GH Wilds? They have a clearance sale going on right now.

Homestead Farm Daylilies has some good prices too.

I talked to a local lady and she told me that daylily rust is going around so bad she doesn't buy them any longer. What are the chances of me getting that from online vendors like GH Wilds. Great prices no doubt about it but rust isn't worth it. I don't know a lot about rust. Is it controllable? Will it kill the plant?

I took a peak at that link posted and the Red Volunteers were pretty, but I LOVED the bright coloring on the "Acquire the Fire" ver vibrant

You can get rust whether you buy new plants or not as is can just come in on the wind. However if you're concerned about getting it in on new purchases you could spring order from places where rust does not overwinter.

I can't really speak to the rust issue, other than to say, I haven't had any in my garden and I've ordered from both sources.

I have seen a note on a local daylily growers website that she had had some problem with rust a few years ago, but she had treated for it and was currently rust free.

We do actually get a winter here, albeit shorter than most, so that may help keep it in check.

In zones 7 and lower, most winters will have enough cold weather to eliminate any rust that might occur. Use common sense and don't over protect your plants.

Those in zones 8 and higher should be careful to buy rust resistant or very rust tolerant daylilies. Daylily rust is endemic to these zones and may come in on the wind. Buying from a rust free zone may not be a good choice, if you buy a plant that is susceptible to daylily rust. I think it is smarter to buy from someone in the south who can and will tell you if the plant is resistant, tolerant or susceptible to daylily rust.
