Spring at the Bungalow...

I have been loving all the gardening and the rewards of all the work over the past 2 years. Here is a tiny preview. Lots more in the works . The fragrance , as always, is amazing. I have been swimming every day now so for the next 6 months the pool is where I will be every day after all the hard work digging and sweating. Hope you enjoy. Wish you could all be here...c

Very beautiful pool garden.
I love the clematis & roses and your wall / fence. Your statuary are gorgeous additions that add the perfect touch of elegance and class. Very Elegant Garden.

I would be in that gorgeous pool all the time, too! I love to swim and love being in and/or near water.

marti8a, My sweetheart(from County.Kerry) has been there 5 weeks but is due back here tomorrow :) and I still didn't put blinds on the kitchen window ! I'm in trouble. We are going back in the Spring and renting before buying land/cottage. There's an interesting permaculture 2 year class we want to take in Co. Cork. We are taking our cat so we need to do her travel papers. The link show's a cottage we like, but they need to drop the price. It's right down the road from one of my SIL's. At one point they wanted over 400Keuro for it(HA HA HA), I wouldn't buy it for more than 100Keuro(add about 32% to get USD) We rented a house right in front of the Shannon(Querrin, Kilkee, Co. Clare) for 5 months(Winter/Spring) in 2009, walked to the beach down the road and took long walks to talk to all the animals in the field(our favourite was a goat, that was left alone). Thanks, everybody! Texasgal47, I hired a landscape architect to design paths, patio, and plantings. I'm good at colors and interiors, but I have *no* gardening sense and, as a design matter, have no ability to think in the 4th dimension: TIME! I can't picture what plants will look like in combination with each other through the seasons and in years to come. I originally hired a landscape architect, as opposed to just a landscaper, because even though the yard is small and looks pretty much flat, we needed to do some complicated things with drainage and levels and I wanted to be sure none of the needed excavating was going to make the 1922 garage fall down. The whole thing is now a miracle of perfect drainage, with water from uphill going through new drains and sheeting across the walks and patio and all going to a new rain garden hidden among the dogwoods. I am, indeed, a very happy camper - and a broke one - but I'm feeling much better than before about the integrity of the envelope of the house, between proper preparation and extensive caulking by the painters and the clever drainage solutions by Ryan the landscape architect.

I'm very pleased with the faucet. The spout is easy to rotate out of the way but stays in place when needed. The controls feel great in my hands. You can easily bump them on if yo have dirty hands and the operate very smoothly. It hides water spots relatively well (it just loses some of its luster until you wipe it down) and is easy to clean. The only thing to be aware of is that the sprayer is not solid metal but that's pretty common from what I understand. We also have one of their faucets in our bathroom and have been pleased with it as well.

Congratulations on your new home! It looks wonderful and it's great to hear that you want to bring it up to date while keeping the original charm. So many old homes are renovated to the point that the original charm is totally lost and the home winds up looking like every new house built in every new subdivision. Sorry to say that here on Houzz most of the photos are in "updated, transitional" style, which is the opposite of what you probably want. Go to the site "Old House Online" and you will see many house tours of bungalows, craftsmen, capes, colonials, victorians, where the homeowners did really thoughtful renovations. Also, Retro-Renovation is a website that showcases old home renovations. Both sites have links to companies that sell products that can help you achieve the look you want.

Oh Annie I wish you could make your way poolside...we would have a grand time of it ! Just finished doing 1/2 mile. I usually get in a mile at least a day. Most times I break it up while I dead head flowers and water. Thank you for the sweet compliments.

Nope Nell believe it or not it has been...2 years !! Now I am reaping the rewards sorta. LOL. I have too much to plant and water and weed and worry about . Maybe it was better when all was hopeless !! Nah I am loving it even though it is back breaking to dig out the tree roots.

I wish you could come have a walk and a glass of sweet tea...c

Hi Caroline~ your slideshow is wonderful! Very southern and very charming! Love the azaleas and jasmine, dogwood, poolside garden and front porch with wicker rockers beckoning to come sit a spell! You've done an amzing job!!! : ) B

MeMo coming from you that means a LOT. I have places that you do not want to see LOL. I guess everyone does. I remember a thread where everyone showed there ugly spots in the garden...when I looked around all I saw was UGLY...it is a lot better now. THANK YOU !!! I am SO glad you are feeling better . I wanna see pics of that new big bed you are working on. c

gottagarden. THANK YOU ! I am trying to make it a NewOrleans courtyard garden. I have pics of so many and have been trying to recreate. I do love to be out there. The wall makes it very private...of course the doctor and his wife and 4 kids across the street can SEE over it from their upstairs...I wonder why their blinds are always closed LOL. Your gardens are fanrastic...I can hardly wait till you start to post more pics. c

It just doesn't get any better: porch with wicker furniture, pool, picket fence, brick walks, and then there are the lovely fragrant plants.

You have done a super job!

Wonderful pictures!
I love the clematis with the jasmine. I walked around the yard yesterday trying to figure out what smelled so nice. I finally discovered my neighbor's jasmine growing over the back fence.

I never learned to swim. The time I would have been learning was at the height of the polio epidemic. All the pools were closed during that time.

slightly jealous. I love my garden BUT I don't have a swimming pool. Lucky you. Lovely place to be.

gldno: thank you...it does seem to be coming together ! I appreciate all the sweet comments and support on the Cottage.

Kathy, I remember the polio epidemic well as my best girl friend got it. We some how still had swimming pools in neighboring towns as the vaccine came almost immediately after she was stricken. I was lucky to learn. I am not great but I can hold my own. Thank you so much.
