but you were told before that they are very common conifers ... grey owl is a name for a very common blue juniper .... probably available locally , if not in a nameless form ...... even at a place like bigboxstore or wallyworld ...

we think of mailing for exotic rarities .... consider if it is worth it for these two .. and if it is .. GO FOR IT... who am i to tell you otherwise ...

go to the website.. get the phone number and call and ask .. they have everything.. but not much listed on the website .... and if they dont have the exact one you want.. ask what they suggest as a look alike ....

they may have some cool light steel blue junipers with flecks of white ....Juniperus scopulorum 'Sparkle'

or these .. more bush form rather than upright:

Juniperus chinensis 'Gold Lace'
Juniperus chinensis 'Saybrook Gold'
Juniperus chinensis 'Daub's Frosted'
Juniperus squamata 'Star Dust'

google all those.. and hit the IMAGES button ... and see if you might want to upgrade ...

Thank you both. Neither of the two junipers I asked about are available ANYWHERE around here--neither at the small nurseries or local big box stores.

Gee's looks like an interesting site. Googling for either juniper indeed brought way too many hits and although I went through the first 5 pages or so before burn out set in, I still didn't find a retail mail order nursery. BTW, horsford nursery isn't mail order either.

Your local nursery might take the time to look through the wholesale catalogues they have on hand, if you go in when they aren't too busy, and they might be able to order it for you. Alternatively, I've gone straight to the wholesalers to ask for things from time to time too, and many will sell direct or might let you know which retailers they supply. The wholesalers are often in the phone book, or might be listed through a local landscape/nursery trades association if there is one.

If you're ever in the Columbus OH area - Seely's Nursery in Hilliard - west Columbus suburb - has some very nice Robusta Greens that would be around 4 ft tall planted

Forestfarm is the best source I`ve found. Remarkable selection.

Monrovia offers 'Robusta Green' so it should be possible to find that around. Their site has a dealer locator feature.

Two nurseries in TN, that I have got plants from are Fantastic plants & Evergreen plant nursery. Now that Evergreen has that certain plant in stock, I am planning to order again. Juniperus "Pathfinder" 20 ft.tall x 6-8 ft.wide Rapid growth, bluish-gray. When I first read of this tree it was Juniperus virginiana "Pathfinder", this nursery has it Juniperus scopulorum "Pathfinder". I am not sure that j.scopulorum will grow in my zone 7-8. I do plan to try. RED

As a substitute for j virginiana grey owl, consider j. chinensis 'blue vase', it has a really cool steel blue color, albeit a different habit.

I like Forestfarm and Porterhowse are two of my favorite mail order retailers.

I love Bethlehem Nursery in CT. I ordered for the first time this fall and the plants were large and beautiful. I will certainly order again.

Mike - would you mind listing the plants you got ?

I heard they had a very bad early spring seazon this year.

I didn't get anything from the (long) list I ordered (I went to the trouble of obtaining a Canadian import permit specifically for that nursery).

Red50, you won't have any problems as Rocky Mountain Juniper grows in much colder (albeit drier) climates than yours. Make sure it is well-drained.

I have ordered from Bethlehem Nursery the last few years and also did not get anything this year. His email notifying me detailed near total losses and indicated that he would not be shipping this year. I am surprised to hear that plants are being sold also. I sent them an email to find out what their status is, but have not heard back yet.

So that explains it. I tried emailing Bethlehem Nursery a few times this spring and never heard a word back from them.

Heard back from Bethlehem Nursery- Dennis said that he could only partially fill a few orders because of bad losses this year. He said he was sorry that he was not able to send out plants.

Let's all hope this winter is kinder. In Dennis' own words-" it truly was the winter from h*ll."

Hmm...let's see if my little brain can remember???
I ordered:
Picea abies 'Pusch'
Picea orientalis 'Dwarf Weeper'
Ginkgo biloba 'Elmwood' and
Ginkgo biloba 'Robbie's Twist'

I had wanted some Abies, too, but Dennis said that he lost almost all of his Abies. I had emailed Dennis first to see if he had the plants that I wanted before I sent him my order.

As you know, Dennis' specialty is umbrella pine cultivars, so I was going mostly for those (although, as you say there is much else to choose from).
I sent my order in BEFORE the late winter disaster, so didn't see it coming....

there is a mailorder nursery in n. carolina calledcamellia forest nursery. i didn't buy any junipers from them but what i did buy was delivered in good shape and is doing well.they do list six different junipers. the website iswww.camforest.com good luck tim

Yes, I would give my eye-teeth to be able to grow Sciadopitys, but Sciadopitys is not hardy in MN. I've killed a couple of plants trying to grow them and have given up. I need to stick to less fragile out-of-zone plants to try and grow here. (:o)

www.evergreenplantnursery.com has both types of Junipers that what you want listed. The plants won't be that big. The prices are very reasonable thou. Worth a shot

I have ordered before a few times and the plants have been very good... growing young plants unlike other places I have ordered from that sent plants that have been sitting in a small pot rootbound for a long time. The plants were well packed and shipped fine, with the rootball in a plastic bag.
