OT: Bulbs Ordered Again

You all are not going to believe this what I did last night. I have been looking at Scheepers and going to order there too but was looking at their selection of greigii tulips. Was looking for more so searching the net.

So wanting a nice selection I found a place that has a wonderful selection of greigii tulips and not the ones on Scheepers. Nothing wrong with the ones on Scheepers as I am going to get some of those also but I wanted more. Looking for newer varieties. So I found a place called Dutch Grown Bulbs From Holland. Apparently your order ships directly from Holland. Lovely selection. Only problem is that it was 100 of a variety at a time, no lesser quantities accepted and with a $150.00 minium order. Hey, you think that would stop me? Of course not! I am now the proud owner (or I will be when they get here this fall) of 400 greigii tulips. 100 each of 4 varieties. I picked GOLDWEST, LARGE COPPER, MARCH OF TIME and SUNDANCE. Honestly they were a bargain at $37.50 per 100 and only $22.00 shipping.

I know were they are going in this one daylily bed, I think I can make the 400 work. It is actually in a place I had thought not to even address this year but I guess those tulips are ment for my garden as I found them! It should be stunning come spring.

So measuring today that bed that I intend to put those tulips is 10 feet long by 4 1/2 feet wide. It has four rows of daylilies in it. Between the ones in the first row, I already have crocus ordered that I will put there. Between those daylily clumps in the last row will be planted daffodil bulbs in clusters. So that takes up some of the space. So the tulips have to go in the spaces between rows and also bewteen daylily clumps in rows 2 and three. Honestly, 400 is an aweful lot of bulbs for the area. I could have ordered less but that would not have worked as I wanted a mix of colors. So I considered 4 types the minium to get the mixed effect. Five might be better but no was could I have ordered another 100 bulbs so the four will do.

I will figgure it all out somehow.

I am really trying to add not just my usual Darwins which return even though decline and my Triumph tulips that I adore and never return, but types are known to return year after year. That way I can have the best of both worlds. Greiggii are an early blooming perennial variety.

I just don't know how you are going to get all those bulbs planted, but I know I'm going to enjoy your photos next spring. Those are really pretty, love the looks of Goldwest especially. Will be interesting to see how well they return, but that will take a while :)
Meanwhile, I'm just looking at putting in a few measly dozen tulips.

The Huntington recently had another of their's bloom. I went to go see it and of course took some photos. I think the leaf is just as interesting as the bloom... Amorphophallus titanum in all of its stinky glory. This bloom was only about 3 feet tall, a far cry from the potential this species has. The plant produces a single leaf, which itself looks like a small tree. The "trunk" of the leaf is really attractive, and incredibly smooth. A view up into the "leaf." Quite a line to see a flower (there were another 50 people or so outside).

Thanks everyone and I do think my garden should look even nicer during next springs bulb season what with my new will be additions. AS far as planting goes, that is why I plot my new bulb additions now in the spring and order early. If I actually waited till Fall, I wouldn't get them as I think about the work of planting them too much. Getting them now forces me to deal with the planting when they arrive in the fall. I forgot to say when I wrote this post that The Becks order was a good deal because they have $25.00 off is you order more than $50.00 which I did. So I think I got a bargain! And I am still very excited about those Firespray tulips. was thinking lots about them last night.

When I first started gardening I didn't know beans. No one in my family gardened. When I bought my first (and only) home I didn't know about zones, heat+humidity and it's effects on plants, or anything else. The plants that first caught my eye at the nursery in spring were Lupines. I loved the foliage. Even when they were in bud when I bought them there was not enough cool spring weather to get them to flower before they just faded away with the heat. I never saw a single bloom in person. Lupines and Delphiniums are a big no-no around here and you are one lucky person to be able to grow them. I hope you post them in bloom.....Maryl

Rita, I was in your 'neck of the woods' yesterday! My husband had a seminar in Port Washington and I had all day to kill with nothing to do and wished I knew where you lived. Are you anywhere near there? We stayed overnight in Rosyln. We drove down Sunday and it took 7 straight hours to get down there and 8 hours (lots of traffic jams) to get home yesterday....we didn't get home until after 1:00 a.m. (too much driving in 2 days for me!!) I think he will be having to go down again at some point & if I could maybe connect with you I 'might' decide all that driving is worth it...LOL. It would be cool to meet a forum friend in person. If I'd seen you yesterday, I would have helped you plant those bulbs! You are one ambitious gardener with all those bulbs! But I totally get it because that's just how I garden. I always undertake major projects and everybody just shakes their heads and smiles because that's what I love to do...but they think I'm a little nuts...LOL. Celeste

I cannot wait until fall while you are planting, and then til spring againwwhen they bloom. Two performances worth seeing!

The big question is, ARE YOU DONE YET?

Holy cow, that's a pile of tulips!

Here's the appeal of it all, and Kay said it perfectly "I cannot wait until..." This whole gardening thing gives us something season after season that we just can't wait for. I'm with Kay, I cannot wait to see your glorious pictures.

I just love a kindred spirit!!! Never enough until all the room is gone. And then squeeze in a few more. Next time DH rolls his eyes at me, I'm going to tell him "Rita is the same way. She ordered more than I did". That's the ticket.

That's right Kay. Just tell him it is all Rita's faut as I just egg you on to get more plants. LOL, ha-ha! Honestly, I am really out of control with the bulbs this year.

oh my gosh,RITA.before you get finished planting all them bulbs,I think you are going to be wishing you had not done it. If not, you are going to be one sore acheing body.Lets hope I wrong about that. but if you get them all planted, you are going to have a gorgeous yard,and hopefully we are going to see lots of gorgeopus pictures. But, I sure got excited this evening, YOU know last spring, when I told you that the guy that cuts my grass brought halp with him, and he reached over my fence and cut down my oriental lilies that had sprouted and was about 4 inches high , that I had planted a couple months before that, and last spring I never had a single one came up, so I thought I had lost every one of them. well, this evening I was out there searching that spot, and lo and behold,I found 6 of them up. a couple of them are about 2 inches high,and the others are barely up, but,I was thrilled to see them coming up, through the weeds and grass there now, so I got busy pulling up weeds and grass this evening for a little while I cant do much at a time.so, some time this summer if I lucky, maybe I have oriental lily blooms to post too.

This year I have already ordered lots of Triumph and late blooming tulips plus some darwins. Parrot and peoney flowered tulips too. But I intend to order lots more Triumphs and darwins as those are my very favorite. The triumphs never return for me but gosh, they are so beautiful. Darwins do better at return but need replacement every so often. Although I do have afew darwns been here for many years just showing up and blooming every spring. And you know that once they are ordered and show up here that I WILL get them all planted somehow.

Jean, I am glad that your lilies are returning this spring. I could never do without my lilies. Great early summer blooms.
