Removed a bunch of cones on Picea Abies 'Pendula'

bunkers

I had some of the most stunning new cones this year on my Picea Abies 'Pendula'. They started as small, bright red/burgundy cones about 1" long ... and quickly grew into large pickle-jar sized cones (green/brown).

The problem was that the sheer weight of these 20-30 cones was basically taking the tree top down to the ground (almost). The tree isn't very big (6' tall and maybe 3/4" caliper).

So I finally decide to just carefully twist off the cones on the top 1/2 branches (removed about 15 or so) ... and got totally covered in sap in process.

Did I hurt the tree or do anything really bad?

I'm trying to keep it going up, not down. That was my motivation, along with keeping it from snapping/contorting itself with all the cone weight.

Thanks,

Scott
