Hi, welcome to the Daylily Forum. There are lots of pretty red and purple daylilies available. I have more pink and peach and white daylilies but I have a few Red ones. I have Noble Warrior (28" 5.5"), Superlative (24" 6"), Chicago Apachee (27" 5"), Bama Bound (24" 5") Suburban Jim's Memento (28" 5"), Wayne Johnson (28" 6")
Buenes Aires (32" 6") which looks more Rose Red, Roses In Snow (24" 5"), Alabama Jubilee (30" 7"), a Vibrant Red Orange and Blackjack Cherry (20" 5"). If you will put these names into Tinker's Daylily Database, you can see a picture. Good Luck. Sarah

Sarah, you have certainly given me quite a few nice ones to think about. I was thinking of trying to find taller ones, they might be more visible since they will be back from the laneway quite a bit. You can never have to many daylilies tho, right? Thanks for the ideas. Marg

Reason for Treason and Betty Ford are other pretty Reds. As for Purples, my favorites would not be good for you since they are Luddy's from Florida. Some of the more northern growers need to jump in here.

I'm at work so my flower info isn't here! One question though-As this is a ring of trees -how sunny is the area? I will look at my plants when I get home to check plant heights. Some reds that come to mind is I See Stars and Firestorm, but I can't remember their heights!

Lisa, there are 5 trees in the circle and they are mature enough now that the bark is starting to turn white. The bright green junipers look really nice against them. The area is full sun. I had initially thought I would keep it a native planting but I think tall daylilies there would look nice. Marg

How tall is tall?

Some of these aren't that tall. I have lots of tall ones that I planted last year that I am waiting on a photo of.
I would also suggest breaking it up with some yellows. Dark colours aren't really that visible from a distance. I friend told me that from their plane you can only see yellows. There are some really nice yellows with purple or red eyes. I can post some if you want.

Thanks for the tip Debbie. The only yellow I have is Betty Warren Woods. I do have Swiss Mint tho, which is a pale yellow. It needs to be divided so I may be using that one. Marg

OK-home now-Fire Storm is 31" and I See Stars is a nice 38". Also Evidence of Aliens-34" (red orange w/ large green throat) is a bit more pricey, my auntie gave me some for a gift or I wouldn't have it. Geneva Fire Truck 30", Marion Brodnax-32" Smith Brothers near black 30"

Most of my other tall ones are yellow or orange-and there a some great brilliant oranges that would stand out.

Two stunning reds that appear frequently on the American Hemerocallis Society's Popularity Poll in several regions are Ruby Spider and Red Volunteer. Two very dark daylilies are Midnight Magic, a nearly black red, and May Night, nearly black purple. Both are beautiful. A new one (to me, anyway) on the Pop Poll is Persian Ruby, which looks like dark red-purple. My all-time favorite deep dark purple is Bella Lugosi, winner of the Stout Silver Medal, the highest award given to daylilies. I pair it with Moonlit Masquerade, a white with deep purple markings, and also a Stout medal winner.
