WANTED: to expand our california native repertoire

We have some california natives. Some are native to surrounding areas as well.

I don't see a lot of california native traders on the plant exchange; I came here via weeddudes request for woodland strawberry on the plant exchange

(incidentally weeddude, we might have that, we have a small white-flowered fragaria ground cover that is ornamental but also edible. I didn't mention it there because I don't see anything off hand that suggests a trade and I am not sure what we have is what you want - I can't nail down a species name on ours.)

Anyway - if there are california native gardeners here, are you interested in a swap? I have a little more than is listed on my page, scanning the first page I don't see any CA posters so pipe up if you are here. I was thinking of checking for interest in a larger CA native swap, see how many folks might be interested.

I have been getting Calif native plants at the meetings of the California Native Plant Society which meets monthly in Balboa Park (del Prado building). I plant them on the joint grounds of UCSD and the First UU Church of San Diego. Anything we could work on?

I am an ex-academic (post doc'ed at UCI, my field was human disease genetics) and a UU'er. Good to meet you!

I don't know if we could work out something or not. Do you plant for the UU and/or the university? Whatcha interested in plantwise? Whatcha got to spare?

I have thought about going to the Las Pilitas nursery in Escondido. Have you been and how is it? If I went there, I'd probably look for arabis, native violets, and assorted butterfly plants.

I am trying to root some ceanothus (not too much luck yet), some ribes, eriogonum, and others. Some of these varieties are listed on my trade page, I could think hard and come up with a few that haven't made it onto the page yet. Feel free to have a look -

And yet those natives just keep getting better and better. Sorry if it sounds like climate bragging, but winter is our season of rebirth here in coastal northern California, and things are just jumping. I've already seen the first Califoria poppies blooming, (along with seeding a whole hillside of them on this latest spec home landscape), and shrubs like the Silk Tassle, Garrya elliptica are looking fantastic right now with their long dangling earrings of white tassles against verdant green foliage. The first of the Ceanothus/California lilacs are also popping, and I have been munching on the Miner's Lettuce, a local native that can actually be kind of weedy in a garden setting, for weeks now. The flowering season will just continue to get more and more colorful through about the end of April, and the Baby Blue Eyes and several species of Clarkia I planted out from 4 inch pots from Annie's Annuals here in Richmond back in December are already bursting into bloom as well. The real possibility of severe water rationing starting later this spring is still threatening us locally, but we even have some 2 days of rains forecast to hit tomorrow, ending this unseasonably warm spell with low 70'sF here in Berkeley. I spent the day up in Sonoma County yesterday wholesale nursery shopping, and enjoyed the scenery immensely, especially the green hillsides with the massive Valley Oaks dotted here and there. I must say, a lot of the Coast Redwoods planted along the Hwy 101 freeway medians did look rather stressed out from several subpar rainfall years, but those redwoods that had planted themselves did not appear to be suffering. The first of the flowering plums are also bursting out in bloom here, as well as all the non-native Acacia dealbata and many varieties of Magnolia soulangeana, M. denudata, M. stellata, etc. The first of the South African Leucadendrons are also getting ready to pump up the volume as well. It sure would be tough to be looking out at gray skies and dirty snow and below freezing temps in comparison to our local conditions, but then again, it isn't exactly tropical swimming in the ocean weather here either, but all in all, a gorgeous California winter's day, and the promise of some much needed rains. And I can't get too worked up about nurseries pigging back on this thread to self-promote, even if it is prohibited. I understand the underlying sense of feeling a bit desperate, what with the slow down in spending, but come on! Be a little more subtle about how you do it, and I bet it would be more successful! It does seem to show that there is no one doing what Spike used to do with yanking threads into the ether...

Will these California natives look good in a cottage garden?

Your choices are perfect for a cottage garden in California. I would grow the roses in the background where they can go wild. Here are a few other plants that I think work well in my garden: Hummingbird Sage (part shade, smells heavenly) Monkey flower (short-lived, but a luscious apricot color and lots of flowers) Annual clarkia (check out both elegant clarkia and godetia/farewell to spring) Annual larkspur Baby Blue Eyes Nemesia California poppy Matilija poppy (needs a massive amount of space) St. Catherine's Lace (ditto- very pretty, but BIG) Mexican Elderberry (so pretty, so huge) Oregon/California Grape Native plants that I did not like in my garden: California fucshia (spelling? too few flowers) Cleveland Sage (too big and dusty-looking for the spot) Tidytips (too leggy and sparse) Plants I always wanted and never had the space for: Garrya elliptica Silktassel plant- gorgeous. Very difficult to find and it is a slow grower. Ceanothus (perfect for a cottage garden) Globe Gilia (so pretty! Love the blue.) Your garden will be spectacular. Do a search for jkom here on the cottage garden to see what she has done with her yard. North American species of milkweed need to have their seed cold stratified during the winter months in order to assure optimum germination, as mentioned by napapen. Most methods use a cold, moist stratification. I've not had personal good luck using a moist medium, but rather a dry medium. I seem to grow molds better the moist way than germinate milkweed seed (or any other seed needing cold strat for that matter). Check out the two links below that will help teach you the technique(s): How To Cold Stratify Seeds: Cold Moist Stratification of Milkweed Seeds Start them now, as the winter season is in full gear. I stratify mine for 6-8 weeks before planting. That will put you roughly in March for potting up or placing them in the ground. A. fascicularis is especially easy to germinate. With A. fascicularis, you should be able to harvest seed the first year if your plants are growing strong and vigorous. A. speciosa may take two or three years before they set seed. Keep us posted on your endeavors!

Beautiful Cori Ann! Does it smell as wonderful as the descriptions? I meant to post back that out of my original 6 plants that "Failed," 5 miraculously started to show green leaves. Apparently bunny munching didn't destroy the root system. I was glad I hadn't gotten around to removing them yet. So we put chicken fence around to protect from grazing and they are slowly growing. Nothing like yours for sure, but I was amazed that they tried to come back. No blooms.

I'd love to know about rooting a few natives, ceanothus and arctostaphylos (sp?) in particular....I have a couple of Ribes that seem to be taking, but the c's and a's seem to be heading south...

Patty...that's quite a plant list. I've got a mix of things growing, but I'm a sloppy record keeper so I forget what trees the seeds are from....cuttings are so much nicer.

Anyway...back to your question. I would like to go to a swap, having never been to anything but proper plant sales. I might not have much to contribute, but I'd like to see what goes on and chat with like-minded folks. I'm in eastern LA county.

BTW...I'm a sort of academic, having p-doc'ed at WSU, and my mom is a casual UU-er...

Hey dr,

I am confused by our ceanothus. I took several 8 inch woody cuttings of all three varieties that we have (concha, skylark, and yankee point) and at first they seemed okay. I put them in moist soil covered with a plastic tent.

Well, they all failed after a few weeks but one - one of the conchas - and it still looks as happy as the day I cut it. Which was two months ago, but it hasn't even hinted at roots yet.

I have also tried rooting small cuttings of these three. Like 3 inch cuttings without much woodiness in the stem. It's too soon to say whether those will root or not.

No attempts to root our manzanita, though we are talking of pruning them and I may put some in water or something to see what happens.

Our ribes cuttings looks like they will take hold.

As for seeds vs cuttings --- I suspect that when I get the knack of propagating by cutting I will be a convert. In the meantime I really enjoy finding seed pods on some roadside plant, and harvesting the seed. The plant ID process is fun too. Several of the seeds I have are from dried up seed pods on a park specimen of this or that - and I have enjoyed learning the species names of the common plants around here. There is uncertainty about traits breeding true, I suppose, though for some species there seems to be only one variety around so it wouldn't seem to be a concern.
