how are daylilies named

I am an orchid grower and have some confusion on how daylilies are named. In orchids when 2 hybrids are bred they then get named a sir name by the hybridizer. and then each seedling is named by a sub name like ( Blc. Norman Rockwell. red heat) and each seedling of that cross is known by Norman Rockwell and the sub names are always diffrent. By what i can tell with daylilies each seedling produced has it own name? if 20 seeds from the same pod all germanated it is possible to have 20 diffrent names for the same cross? please correct me if i am wrong or explain this to me.

To start, very seldom are 2 plants from the same cross named by the same person. They are named and registered the same way orchids are. The same kind of system that is used for orchids was being used for bromeliads, but they have been getting away from it. I think the reason the hybridizers are being more selective and only naming and registering the best. Lets face it if NORMAN ROCKWELL is the best plant to come out of the flask, why introduce something that is inferior? I know the real answers, and there is more than one, so there is no need to explain.

There is one Trio of Daylilys that came from the same pod, they are TRAHLYTA, SATIN BIRD, and UNIQUE PURPLE, each is a star and would have been introduced anyway, but this is rare in daylilys.

I hybridize on a small scale, my seedlings are identified by a numbering system known only to me. Just a record keeping thing. Out of hundreds of seedlings, I have introduced and name 5 daylilies.

Hi everyone, A beautiful day here also - sunny and in the 50's. Cleaned up and cut back most of the garden this past week. Daylilies are popping up everywhere! First of all, I, MaryB, do hereby solemnly swear that I will send my April partner a box or I am out of this swap for the next month and three years after that (cross my heart). YES G., I WANT IN! Secondly, I am very sad that it has now been TWO WEEKS since my March partner has received her bunny box (according to delivery confirmation), and has not posted or emailed me. I really felt I went above and beyond to make a nice box and include extras and have not even heard if she likes it. Yep, just very disappointed. Sorry, just had to say it... Thirdly, I just have to tell you all that I was VERY BAD on ebay yesterday - bought 9 new daylilies (5 of them Spacecoasts), some oriental lilies, and a hosta book. Can't wait for it all to come! Okay, now on to belated birthday wishes to Marea and Janet - so sorry I missed you on your special days - hope they were wonderful! Janet, I also am so sorry to hear of your loss of your sister. I hope you are finding peace in special memories. Marea, I am so sad to say that I lost one of the cannas from you over winter - my favorite - LePoupre. If you will be dividing and have extra this year, please let me know and maybe we can trade. YOU KNOW there's others I'd like too! Or, if you will be listing any on ebay, please give me a heads up so I can bid. Did I read that you're looking for sedums? Thanks Canna for matching us up. Now I'll have to drive clear to Texas or somewhere just to find something Jo doesn't have!!! I think we need to know a couple of months in advance who we'll have so we can check out their lists and see what we can find. lol Canna, thanks for bringing us along on your trip today. Really funny! That makes me think of his female friend he was raised with who got married and sent out invitations to the wedding. Two years later she got a divorce, took the extra wedding invitations to the printer and had them print a divorce party announcement on the reverse side! You are correct dheppel about the 20 seedlings being named different names. The hybridizer can call them what ever he wants when he registers them as long as the names follow the American Hemerocallis Society rules(such things as number of letters and so on). Some daylily breeders do use a "prefix" as the first word of the name, such as all of the Pauline Henry daylilies had the prefix Siloam at the start. But this isn't a requirement. I live in Canada and we have purebred registered holsteins. All breeders must have a prefix and this must be the first word of the cow name. I agree that daylily naming seems kind of random to me. The breeders that use a prefix to me are getting extra advertising because you can always tell who bred them. But there is no rule to say that someone else can't use the prefix you use as the first word of a name they pick as well. For example James Gossard uses Heavenly as the first word of many of his daylilies but there are many daylilies that are already "Heavenly something" bred by other breeders. It is very confusing but I guess that's the way it's been for the whole time and no one has seen a reason to change it.
