Concolor fir taproot

Last year I bought 50 3-0 concolor firs from the Carino cooler sale. I planted them in a transplant bed and about half of them made it through the winter, which was great considering what I paid for them.

When I planted them, I noticed that instead of having a spaghetti-like root system of spruces, they had a single tap root with only a few fibrous roots radiating from the taproot. Since the taproot was broken during transplant, what happens to the root system? Does the tree try to regrow the taproot, or does it transition to a more fibrous root system? I plan on keeping them in the transplant bed another couple seasons.

On a side note, 46 of the 50 3-0 Serbian spruces I bought at the same time made it through the winter. I highly recommend the Carino cooler sale if you are looking for seedlings to put in a transplant bed. The sale should be starting any day now.
