South Dakota conifers

Here's some photos of conifers developed in South Dakota. The two thuga I have on a full southern exposure with full winter sun and wind and they don't blink an eye. Developed to withstand South Dakota winters, which to say the least can be more than a bit tough. The mugo is from what I understand a seedling selection and develops strong central leader. Iseli's web page has a good discription of these three plants

How fun Jana!! We took a motor home trip out there 2 summers ago with our twin sons and had the time of our lives! The Badlands are amazing. One of my boys loved Mt. Rushmore and one...not so impressed. We have two older dds that we didn't do many of the trips we should have. Making up for lost time with these two. Hope you made it to the "Corn Palace" ;-)

Can I grow figs in South Dakota, Zone 3?

Hello, unfortunately you can not grow figs in the ground where you live, at least year round. I really can't either, here in Michigan. However, each year I plant my hardy Chicago Fig in the ground after threat of frost has passed. In the fall after the leaves fall, I overwinter the fig in a pot in my attached garage. I water very occasionally in the winter so it does not dry out. This is the third year I have overwintered in the garage it has always produced figs. It has gotten to be approximately 5 feet tall. This September I harvested approximately 20 figs. If you don't have an attached garage, the fig can be overwintered anywhere in a location that stays above freezing in the winter, but below 50 degrees. I hope this helps, Rich.

It was purchased as a picea pungens "Early Cones" from Mr. Fincham quite a few years back. Coenosium nursery is were the majority of my conifers came from, back in the day. I'm very fortunate in that I have 2 acres to garden in a rural setting, with all the soil being native tilth.

We did the same trip last year and had a blast. We stayed a few nights at various motels and even one in Hot Springs too (neat little town), and from there we drove South to Ardmore, SD to visit a Ghost Town which we enjoy doing when we can find them. The town is like everyone just up and left, which is essentially what happened. Tidbit: Last recorded population was in 1980 with 16 people. There are old buildings and 15-20 vacant homes still standing and some with yards filled with classic cars. We ran into a mailwoman who only delivers every few weeks and she said there are 2-3 residents still there. It would be eerie at night; it kind of was during the day. Needles Highway was a great adventure with fabulous views. We did it twice from different directions. Did you hike the Notch Trail in the Badlands...the sunsets/rises are picture worthy.

Like I told you before, I wasn't familiar with both Thujas.

The Iseli Nursery is showing another shape of the 'Norm Evers'
I guess their plants are shaered haevy in a pyramidal form.

You mentioned tree times "Thuga" but I think you ment to say "Thuja"... :0)

'Tannenbuam' must be written as 'Tannenbaum' which is German for "Pine tree".
Till my surprise this seedling selection is an American cultivar with a German cultivar name...

Pinus mugo 'Tannenbaum': would love that one but I am guessing it is only available in America.
"Tanne" actually means "fir" in German. "Fichte" is "spruce" and "Kiefer" is pine.

Richard, you're right, I translated German to Dutch and then "Tann" looks very much to "Den".
A "Den" is a Pine in English, so it's only a language confusion.
On the other hand the "Tannenbaum" doesn't have the habit of a fir so I don't have a clue why the founder named this plant this way...

Thanks for the corrections on spelling one of my short comings, spelling, terrible at it. The 'Rushmore' would be a bit more full, but I'm learning from this site. After reading the post on multiple leaders in thuja's I went and checked all mine. And sure enough, most of them, so I bit the bullet and did a lot of pruning. Ken, love my flamingo's, I want a flock of them

I had a pair of Pink Flamigos for a while. Had em' for years.
They were a joy to behold! Never knew where they would pop up next.
When Tongue and Cheek died, I had a hard time deciding where I should bury them.
