Comments (10)Thanks Harv for showing us these pics. Like I told you before, I wasn't familiar with both Thujas. The Iseli Nursery is showing another shape of the 'Norm Evers' I guess their plants are shaered haevy in a pyramidal form. You mentioned tree times "Thuga" but I think you ment to say "Thuja"... :0) 'Tannenbuam' must be written as 'Tannenbaum' which is German for "Pine tree". Till my surprise this seedling selection is an American cultivar with a German cultivar name... Here is a link that might be useful: Iseli info...See MoreSouth Dakota Spring
Comments (13)Hi Harv, You must prune off the reverting branches on your maple. They'll grow more vigorously than the variegated branches, and it's best to cut them off as soon as possible. I have to do this every year on my A. campestre 'Carnival'. You have such a lovely garden! It's a treat to see your large specimens, and everything works together so nicely. I look forward to seeing more. Alex...See MoreA few more winter trachy pics
Comments (16)"How long is frost period in NJ?" It really depends on where you are. Factors include proximity to the ocean, metropolitan heat islands, and of course, altitude, and latitude. But in my zone 7, hard frosts are usually done with by early April and first harder frosts of autumn are mid to late November (though it was earlier this year). So that it is generally frost free for 210 plus days. Trachys don't seem to mind moderate cold and can even tolerate snow and ice (and precip tends to be heavy year round). Their leaves will change color somewhat or even appear spotted at times of bitter cold but they revert back to normal on average winter days--at least when planted near the south side of a house. I think the thing that helps them here is that it is not continuously arctic cold during the winter and there are frequent intermittent milder periods in the 40' and 50's. Still, there aren't too many palms that will put up even with brief periods of subarctic cold--especially when combined with wet conditions!...See MoreWonderful Trip to South Dakota
Comments (9)How fun Jana!! We took a motor home trip out there 2 summers ago with our twin sons and had the time of our lives! The Badlands are amazing. One of my boys loved Mt. Rushmore and one...not so impressed. We have two older dds that we didn't do many of the trips we should have. Making up for lost time with these two. Hope you made it to the "Corn Palace" ;-)...See Moreplantkiller_il_5
