Donna, I had this happen to me also. I bought 5 peach trees from C & O nursery.... (see link below) If you can determine that the sprouts are above the rootstocks, then there is hope. Choose a good sprout and tie it to the old dead wood to train it up. Don't cut off the dead wood quite yet; it will help to train up the new sprout and keep it from breaking off easily. Personally I would take up the issue with whomever you purchased them from. They should be replaced! Here is a link that might be useful: C & O nursery experience

Re: Bugs/"Circle of Death" My father-in-law has one of those old time Bernz-o-Matic propane bug foggers...you know: the kind you light with a match and it sends out a "James Bond" smoke screen of bug killer? MAN! is that thing fun to use!!! If you let it warm up REAL GOOD (HOT!) before you pull the spray trigger it will send out enough fog to make the house disappear from view from the street. On a calm night it's like something from a 1950's horror movie. GREAT toy!

I have two of this species, they have done well in full western filtered sun, I water very little in the summer, and they get rain water in the Winter. Too much water the the lower leaves turn black and fall off, the one that gets more sun has given me 7 flower spikes this past winter but no seeds. The are easy to grow and not really that slow if left out side in open run. I am in zone 10 and that may make a big difference. I have seen them 15Ft + tall with many branches in open run where the weather is a little warmer all year.

when I used to live in the twin cities, the common lingo used by designers and la types was that they carefully selected plants for your personal landscape based on soil preferences and adability to the area, ie, cold hardiness. And if course you can rhoddies in high pH, clay soil, in a wind tunnel. Ok, so the wind tunnels weren't that common, but my experience tells me that broad regions of the upper Midwest tend to the alkaline, and soils can vary widely over even small distances. When I lived in mn, I was constantly trying things I had no idea of how they'd grow. if you rely on only the known reliables in that weather, your idea of exotic is how many varieties of spire and nine bark can you grow? So i'd try different things. Korean arb? dead as toast before thanksgiving. Japanese Stone pine? still thriving without ever so much as the slightest winter burn almost 20 years later. Turkish filbert? one survived and thrives, one died after a couple years. You try those things that you dare. the risk is failure, the reward is something no one else has. of course, as you move into milder winters, what is defined as questionable becomes quite a bit different.

In response to your question, the 'what in Hades' moment was seeing it in such a mature tree Aloe specimen - that was a first for me. Most people never see anything like that, and I think you are very spoiled in your Southern Californian C&S enclave.

I saw lots of infestation at the LA Arboretum when I was there recently. I wish they would at least make an effort to control it before it spreads even more.

The gall is ugly-but nothing you can do now. I have a outdoor Ficus benjamina that develops a gall..I have cut it off 10x at least,..it just grows back.

It is interesting that the plants continue to grow well with the galls. I was under the understanding that it would severely compromise the health of the plant. My small collection is still mite free and i Quarantine when I bring plants home from the store. I have a feeling, that it is only a matter of time.

Stanofth, Are you suggesting that the fear of galls is over emphasized and that we will learn to live and deal with this malady, and familiarity will breed a certain amount of laissez faire along with contempt. Are there Aloe mites in South Africa? I have heard that they came here from Europe. I am still hazy on my mite history. Is there an environmental factor that keeps mites under control in South Africa if they are there?

I have oak trees with many galls on them. It gives them character. Their wood is treasured. I am not sure I want to become this type of accepting of the dreaded Aloe mite..

I just pulled out an A. tauri with gall mite, bagged it up and threw it in the trash. I hope I don't find more. Not happy.
