What Do You Do When The Grass Don't Grow?

Not much yard work to do this weekend so I took apart the snow blower to replace the friction drive wheel. I'm gonna clean it up and sell it and instead buy a plow for the GT245. I decided snow blowing is not for me.

Once or twice a season, a snowblower would be more effective at my place but a snow blade is a lot more fun!!!

Oh yeah. As much as I'd like to sell the walk behind blower (giving me more room in the garage) I know that there will be a few snows per winter when I will appreciate the blower.

Now if I could only convince the CFO of the value of a tractor mounted blower...

I have removed true Pampas Grass before. It's work, but not THAT bad. Be sure to wear long sleeves and gloves. Protect as much of your skin as possible because the grass blades are very sharp and will cut you. Digging really is the fastest and most effective way to get rid of it. Sharpen your shovel! Cut around the outer edges of the clump and then use a SHARP shovel (A sharp shooter works best) or axe and start chopping the clump into sections. The roots are extremely tough at the surface, but they are easier to cut through as you get deeper into the ground. You can also try using a pruning saw. Just be warned that this is slower and will likely ruin your saw. Once you've cut it into pieces, it won't be so heavy to pull out of the hole.(If you have a helper, you might be able to just lift the whole clump out of the hole, thus saving a step. Depends on how big the clumps are, and how strong your backs are.) The residual bits are pretty simple to dig out, or you can use Round-up. I don't know what your springs look like, but I am usually so busy with planting that I would never get to a big project like this then. Besides, the weather is much more conducive to vigorous work right now. You'll thank yourself a million times if you do it this winter. Pick a bright sunny day and get to it. Good luck! All this being said, if you decide that digging it out is simply too much for you, start spraying it just as soon as it begins to put on new growth in the spring. Keep it up until the clump is gone. This may well take the better part of an entire season, especially if the clumps are old.

Cutting them back only delays flowering. It doesn't stop it or harm the plants. In fact, cutting them back makes them fuller and invigorates them. Better to cut them back than not. If you've got brown growth with new shoots cut all the brown growth back to the lowest buds even though they are dormant. It will sprount out more vines. All Clematis, no matter what variety they are should be hard pruned the first few years.

I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago.

Jane, why would people throw up over using coasters? I have several nice sets (mostly from ebay), including some stone ones with fossils in them, hand-carved wood, tooled leather, miniature Oriental rugs. It gets so humid here in the summer that a beverage glass will sweat a big puddle all over a table, and the hot mugs we slurp from all winter long make nasty marks on wood, and the rough bottoms of handthrown pottery can scratch something fierce. DH pretty much wrecked the top of his ~150yo Victorian nightstand leaving a cup of hot coffee on the unprotected surface, I could have killed him because now I'm going to have to fix it. (I had glass tops cut for them when I first bought them, but I hate the "clank" sound of something like a glass or mug being put down on a glass surface, and that glass is a dust magnet.) Most of our tables are antique in the sense of "old stuff" rather than "valuable" but it doesn't mean I still think it's okay to trash them. I'm not one of those people who scurries around sticking coasters under people's drinks when we have people over though, that's just rude IMO.

I have a concrete drive and I like having the option of scraping it clean. The snow blower leaves a layer on the drive which melts and freezes. I also think staying put in a seat is safer then being on your feet while man-handling the monster while standing on a sheet of ice.

My blower works great on concrete ,scrapes it bare ,as long as you don't drive on it first.

Wish my grass wasn't growing, it's rained off and on for two weeks, yards too soft to mow, water still standing in parts of it and the grass is growing by leaps and bounds. Oh well, guess I'll get some more use out of the lawn sweeper once I do get to mow.

Well I haven't mowed in 2 weeks now... no rain and grass is really turning brown. City has asked people not to water lawns. I guess I'll change oil & filter on my new JD , only 7 1/2 hrs on it for something to do as long as I can't mow. I spose when it does rain then it won't stop and then it will be to wet to mow...LOL.

By next winter I'll have the plow mounts on the WH 1964 854 and the Blower set up on the WH 1969 Charger 12. This past winter there was 2 times where the blower would have been much better than the blow, though I did manage ok.

I'll drive the tractor anyway!!!!!!!

Since my drive is about 1200 feet long, driving to get the paper and the mail is a nice moment.

Speaking of snow, I have a 42" blower for the front of my Conquest. It works great! I kept the Toro 826 when we moved and that clears out the garage area so I can get the out the car to get the tractor going.

What do I do when the grass doesn't grow? REJOICE!!

Here, it usually grows so fast it requires mowing every 4 or 5 days. My Dad came down from Seattle once and said 'Your lawn looks nice. What do you put on it and how often do you water it?'

I told him I NEVER water it and if I caught someone spreading fertilizer on it I would shoot them - I have to mow it twice a week as it is

don21, hypothetically (or pathetically) speaking: As dry a season as we have had this year, if someone were to ask me what I put on it to get such a nice, green lawn............I'd probably have to answer, "Green latex paint."

In most of Texas it has rained for 3 or 4 weeks lot of flooding I have yet to complain because I like temp. in the mid 80's and no watering of grass.

I will stick with the snow blower.Because I have a gravel driveway.That way no gravel to rake out of the grass in the spring.The laver of ice is a good thing for me.

The grass keeps growing this year.What I need is something to do when it does not snow.This reminds me I should fire up the snow blower to keep it running good during the off season.

The morning walk, or sometimes early evening walk is about 5 miles at a brisk pace. Then we have the elliptical training for another 30 minutes.

here in ga. since we have been in a drought and have no grass as well to mow... we gather around a make believe fire, put our headbands on (with feathers of course), our mocassins, and dance around in circles...may not grow grass or produce much rain but at least it is time consuming..lol

If it doesn't stop raining here in SC Kansas I will soon have to start building an ark. I have water sitting in the trees behind the house and am having fungus problems in the lawn (no, I have not watered). Very odd weather for us this year. Around here everyone just puts a blade on their pickups for snow removal. The city takes care of the streets (except for in subdivisions).

I have a in-ground irrigation system. My lawn slows down in the heat, but there is always something to mow.

On a similar vain however, a favorite hobby of mine during the growing seasons is to get my miracle grow hose-end lawn sprayer, fill it w/ Ortho Max bug spray, and create a death ring around my house.

I really really hate bugs.

My father-in-law has one of those old time Bernz-o-Matic propane bug foggers...you know: the kind you light with a match and it sends out a "James Bond" smoke screen of bug killer? MAN! is that thing fun to use!!! If you let it warm up REAL GOOD (HOT!) before you pull the spray trigger it will send out enough fog to make the house disappear from view from the street. On a calm night it's like something from a 1950's horror movie. GREAT toy!

Ooooh, I could have really used the fogger. Send some 'death fog' into my woods to kill all the damned gypsy moth catterpillars that defoiliated everything.

I would have been the most popular guy on the street for a month or so !

Finally got to mow last night, had to put my seat belt on so the skeeters didn't lift me off of the tractor!
