How do you prune/cutback clematis when you don't know what TYPE??

Hi, I have 3 clematis,,comparatively young,,one was in 3-5 gal container when I bought it and 3 were just these little sprigs in a bag on clearance at Walmart...I'm new to gardening only 2-3 yrs and at time didn't keep or even knew the variety. I've later read that what type of variety of clematis will determine if you cut to ground each year or if yours bloom off of last yrs growth etc.

My oldest one has been in ground almost 2 yrs,,largest when I bought it, this yr. grew, bloomed,,now vines are brown (looks dead) but bottom near ground has new shoots coming out? I'm a waterer kind of gal so that is not a problem. The 2 little ones I have left have been transplanted into gal/qt containers are are finally twirling around a wrought iron fence and are all green right now.

How do you treat clematis for care/most flowering when you know nothing about them??? tx, Nicole
