Don't look a gift 'aloe' in the mouth? (A. Plicatilis)

So, a neighbor of mine apparently bought an aloe plicatilis off ebay; however, when it arrived she decided that it's trunk was too small for her taste, and rather than wait for it to grow, she would buy a new one. However, she only had room for one of these guys, so she offered the "runt" to me.

Well, I happened to find it beautiful and now runty at all, and gladly and gratefully took it from her. It was still in it's shipping box, so I did my best to create some serviceable soil and pot it... I mixed up mostly pearleite/gravel/charcoal and then some (maybe 20%?) cacti/succulent potting soil... and put him in a 5 or 7 gallon pot - the biggest I had laying around, don't remember how big it is exactly...

So my problem is, though I loves these plants and am already quite attached to my new little guy, I never bought one before because I didn't really think that my home was a suitable place for them, assuming they much preferred to be in in the ground, probably in Arizona or Cali... Do you think my little guy will survive? does anyone have any advice as to how to best take care of him? I am able to grow Adeniums, Jades, and several other succulents quite well in the environment I've created with my minimal space outsides plus growlights, do you think this Aloe Plicatilis will do ok as well?

I did some reading on the backlogs of this forum, and therefore tried to create the most aerated soil I could with what I had... I know that it does not really do its growing in the summer, but does that mean that I shouldn't give it any water, or it should still get a little bit?

Usually I like to do a lot of research before I get a plant, so I'm a little overwhelmed by this one being thrust at me, but it is adorable! I really hope I can keep it healthy!

thanks in advance for any advice! Here are some pictures! :)
