That is a great plant! How are you growing it in NYC at this time of year?

I have it in a super sunny southern window that reaches 95 degrees when the sun shines in, and I hardly water it... It is in a pot that is hardly bigger than it is, pot is maybe 1in for the 1/2 - 2/3in plant, with mostly perlite and small grain pumice and just a *tiny* bit of soil. It dries out like 2hrs after I water, and even so I think I water it once a month or less. So far it seems happy enough, im kind of going by trial and error after reading as much as I could find about it :) If you have any hints for me please let me know, lol!

That's a great title. One out of three ain't bad.....

That's an even better plant. I always thought of them as mature oak trees (from an ant's perspective) or miniature baobab/palm tree crosses. I personally applaud you for trying to grow it. It grew well for me in SD but I daresn't grow one here (yet).

great looking plant you got there :), have you noticed that the right side of the stem looks like a monkey's head :D?

also, i know this isnt the same plant and prob. not even in the same family but, last year i stuck a few "hairs" from a Euphorbia medusa in a pot and they rooted, but all they have done so far is grow longer in the end. does any1 have any experience growing this plant, or know if it will ever grow into a normal medusa ?

Cactusmcharris, I always love your witty titles, so I'm flattered you liked mine! it seemed fitting ;). As far as the little guy - so far he's been cooperative, I think you should give it a try! I love the oak/baobab from an ant's perspective description!
His windowsill gets super hot, like 95-100 degrees when the sun shines in, but when it doesn't it drops to like 65, I'm hoping that is mimicking a desert enough to get him through the winter, then outside to enjoy real sun and fresh air he goes!

Jonas, I hadn't noticed the monkey head, but now that you mention it... love it :) And I had no idea you could plant the "hairs" from euphorbia medusa and they would root! cool!

Plant certainly looks larger than a ý" and the pot looks larger than 1".

When I get rid of all of these extra cuttings I'll do just that.

BTW, I wanted to ask you - where did you get that pot? It looks too deep to be a saucer and not the same configuration as a bulb pan....

Mike, believe it or not, I took the pic with my boyfriend's Iphone 4 - the thing takes way better pictures than my little old digital camera! I just got up close in it's face with a light shining down, and it worked out well :)

Cactusmcharris, I actually got the pot at a Micheal's Arts and Crafts store, I was in there getting stuff for a project and when I saw the tiny (I think maybe Doll House Pots? it's like an inch tall X an inch wide, regular terracotta though) I thought it'd be perfect for the little avonia :)

I have one of these too though yours is a lot nicer than mine.

Hope I've got the right idea about when to water it this time of year. Mostly waiting till the caudex starts to look dessicated, and then sparingly at that. I've heard some people say to keep them completely dry in the winter, but I tried that with a number of succulents last year with less-than-satisfactory results.

I don't know what's pictured there, but if it's a succulent plant it's in a mix of too much peat.

wandering willow, I think you hit the nail on the head with those temperatures! But I wonder if you might be underwatering it a bit...this species gets about 3" of rain during the winter months in its native habitat, and that might explain why the caudex is shrunken, instead of plump.

Jonas, that is cool that they rooted and are growing, do you think they will eventually develop the little caudexs or just continue to grow as just the "hair part"?

R, I think you may be right that I am under watering it... it looked about the same as it does now when I got it, so I wasn't thinking that it was shriveling up, but I do remember that when I was doing research on it photos were plumper... I will give watering more a try - I hate to think it is thirsting to death! I'm just kind of a chicken when it comes to watering succulents I'm not familiar with, lol.

ww, i dont know if it will form a caudex which is why i asked about it in the first post :) unfortunately i had an accident last night dropped a pot with globose euphorbia's on the medusa hairs and almost destroyed both plants :/ not sure how damaged the medusa got but i think 1 or 2 hairs got squished

Your plant isn't an Avonia, and I don't see your "first post." Maybe you'd like to start a new post, or give us a pointer to your first post, so we can respond better?

I think your plant may be a Euphorbia, but it's etiolated, too, along with the peaty soil - that's two strikes against a proper ID. When spring comes, I'd repot it in a smaller pot and in better soil. Then you'll be ready for it to grow.

And as you wrote, it would be better for yours to be in a different thread, but WW didn't seem to mind the hijacking.

i wasn't asking for the id, i know what plant it is :)
(its Euphorbia flanaganii)
what i was asking about was if it would develop a stem when propagated from cutting.
and yes i know it has to be repottet, i just havent gotten around to it yet :/
