Yellowing on Thuja Green Giants - Cause?
Comments (1)hi IMHO.. normal early spring growth phase .... was just out looking at my 50 .. and they look exactly the same .... and i dont have a concern in the world about them ... if you go out at dusk ... or dawn.. when your eyeballs can open wide ... you will see that they do NOT appear as yellow ... ken...See MoreOne of 30 Green Giant Arborvitae turning yellow
Comments (5)It is safe to transplant one of the other trees that I just planted last fall? ==>> in fall.. why hot ... listen.. that is a large tree ... my WAG.. total guess.. is that it was dug up for delivery to you.. and it was at that digging ... that its roots were massacred ... and that is why it coned like crazy this year.. a response to a death threat ... however .. it was babied enough thru potting/shipping.. etc.. that it survived ... and now.. it is showing its demise ... you will never know what is going on.. underground.. until it dies and you dig it up.. and hose off all the soil .... and see what was done down there ... the odds of it being.. anything but a root issue.. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.. is low to nil.. compared to the root issues ... most stock shipped is so sterilized according to state horticultural guidelines .. i just doubt you brought in a problem that will affect the others ... its possible.. just not probable... when one starts thinking about the millions of arbs shipped all over the world ... in other words.. i would quit worrying about the 9th plague of the bible ... this one was just bad ... and the only reason to move one from the end.. is to maintain a basically similar size.. in the middle of the bunch ... one year later.. even a new one.. wont be all that out of range ... especially in a few years ... again.. a 29 out of 30 batting average.. is GREAT ... thats .997 ... ken...See MoreMy Thuja (Green Giant) is yellowing and browning
Comments (11)what bboy means.. is that GG is a hybrid between Thuja standishii x Thuja plicata 'Green Giant' .. and not simply a Thuja ... regardless.. it is dead.. you wont know why until you dig it up .. if not shipping.. handling or watering.. there is even a chance that the balling itself.. chopped off too many roots... please review the planting instructions at the link.. and if you replace it.. SKIP ALL AMENDMENTS.. and plant high in clay ... and do it in the right season.. june is getting late in many 0parts of the country.. to do it best .... since GG can grow 2 to 3 feet per year.. even in cold zones.. i dont really understand why you bought it so big ... a smaller plant is easier to get home.. easier to plant.. and easier to get re-established ... and... you can buy a potted one.. and not worry about all the roots being chopped off ... also skip the snake oil quick start .. unless you have some left ... its of no harm.. its just not worth the money .... and i have no clue what a deep root waterer is ... but INSURE that the root mass never dries.. nor gets too wet.. you check with your finger.. or a small trowel ... had you done that this time.. you would have know if it was too wet or too dry ... something bothers me about your plant.. i am not sure it is a GG ... it looks too pendulous .... but the pics are too small for me to see well ... maybe joy will tell us ... hit the warranty .. take the money.. and buy a smaller plant.. i would bet a buck.. a 3 footer... will outgrow the other in 5 years .... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreGreen Thuja turning light yellow and then red
Comments (5)those spots are dead ... and should be clipped out.. back to live growth ... that lowest spot.. i might suggest dog ... but on the first plant... that would be one mighty large dog ... lol ... what happened out of the ordinary this year?? .. drought??? .... too much water??? ... the first might need to be removed/replaced .... the second will fill in ... in a season or two .... evergreens dont usually brown that fast ... the damage might date back all the way to last winter ... its not uncommon it 'shows' after the heat of the season peaks ... such just sucked all the moisture out of the affected areas ... and then they browned ... i will leave ti to others to discuss possible disease issues... if any ... ken...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
