Those look nice. I have had a blue selection for 5 years now and can't get it to form a leader. Plus the needs seem to burn evert winter.

Do you know anything about the following plant offered by Arrowhead Alpines

A rather newly described species from China, similar to lanceolata but with longer steeley blue
needles and longer shoots. Hardiness is untested here but Tony says it should be fairly hardy
despite the tropical look. It has taken us years to work out a cutting method (foot long cuttings of
current years growth taken in winter with bottom heat), but we finally have a few to offer. The
plant is spectacular and very fast growing.

Where do you have yours planted in your yard? I thought about getting another but bringing it in for the winter.

Arrowhead Alpines sure has a lot of things! I went there two years ago and bought quite a few things. My Snow Sprite Cedar is still doing quite well. I also got Magnolia Vine, an Ephedra, and a few gentians.

I will have to look into that Cunninghamia. I wonder is that a new species or a cross?

Is it synonymous because of ignorance(namer didn't realize it had already been named) or because of some characteristic(s) or isolated location that made it seem different from C. lanceolata?

Yeah... I seem to be having the same problem here...

But while the needles are burnt, the leader is actually still alive : You can see in these photos that new shoots are sprouting up from the leader and from some live bits of shoots close to the stem....

Anybody know what happens next ?

C'mon all you experts... let's hear some sharp insights on this plant! (please!)

It's not so difficult to get a leader on a plant.
The only thing you have to do is cut it back till 30 cm. above the ground and see what happens.

I did this with both my bigger one's, the species and the 'Glauca'.

You have to cut away the brown parts, now it looks very untidy.

Aha! ..pruning! ...why didn't I think of that!

Actually, the reason is that I had no idea whether the brown parts would recover -- which in fact they do, to some extent... I guess the thing to do is to prune just past where the new growth appears...
