Yellow Newly Planted Italian Cypress

My newly planted Italian Cypress is turning a yellow from the bottom inside out. I figured I was watering them to much because I watered them once every 2-3 day, so I laid off the water for 6 days and since then it has been hot and pretty humid. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I thought you were supossed to water newly planted tree well. Anyways I need help on what to do. they are about 5 ft tall and are in clay soil. Please Help.... Thanks!

Dig down and inspect the moisture situation at the root.

Well, I think Italian Cypress are used to fairly dry conditions. What part of the USA are you in? From the sound of it - hot, humid conditions and clay soil - don't sound like good growing conditions for Italian Cypress.

Was the plant sold locally or did you mail order the plant? I'd search the Internet for the best growing conditions for Italian Cypress and see if they match your conditions. If not, that's your answer.

hello everyone, I have seven italian cypresses six to seven ft. apart, I planted them six years ago one suddenly died last year and I replaced it with one the same size as the rest, now they're aprox. 8 to 9 ft. tall. they were all nice and green during and after winter time, now I noticed that two are turning brownish and dry but at the same time there's tiny little green branches popping out from the trunk, they look bad, green in some parts and really dry in others. I don't water these trees with dripping lines, they get the water from the sprinkle system 5 mins. in the morning and 5mins. in the evening, the weird thing is that last year it happened exactly the same thing but only with one of these two during summer time last year and slowly turning green when we were getting close to fall-winter, I really don't have a clue if I'm watering to much or not. and why the other trees look green from the outside and when I stick my hands through the branches they look dryish from the inside, it's getting hard for me to understand these trees. I had a dream long time ago that I had these 7 or 8 italian cypresses lined up tall and green, it would be so sad that now that they're 8 to 9 ft. tall I'll have to chop them down because I let them die. please HELP !!! oh !! and by the way last year I started using this liquid food from Miracle Grow every 2 weeks and it seems it was working good now I started to use it again two weeks ago, should I keep using it, should I stop using it, what kind of food or fertilizer is good for these trees ? thx. When mine weren't doing well it was because they weren't getting enough water --- I thought they were because of where the irrigation system was... nope, nada where they are, so I had to open some new lines. Are you SURE they're getting all this water you THINK they are? You might want to dig down next to them to check. I also found that a weekly spraying of the tree itself seems to help.... maybe because it washes off the bugs. When mine were new I watered them well almost daily; now once a week. I think I'd try dousing them with a weak dishsoap solution, then rinse them well with clear water.

trim it up a bit and apply Bayer Tree and Shrub as directed on bottle. same issues here on cypress......it works.

i would say pretty much dead..nothing to save ... the soil looks extremely dry ... newly planted plants. are not drought resistant ... insure deep proper watering for the rest ... most of us dont plant in august ... so its not surprising.. return on warranty .. talk with your seller .. ken

Cypress like warm, dry climates/well-drained conditions. They can adapt to hot conditions and many soil types. Clay is harder for them to adjust to, particularly if it is not well-drained. If the area is flat and soil clay, you may need to either relocate or berm-up slightly.
What bboy suggested is best course of action.

My Zone is 8b and I live in midland SC. Yes it is humid and hot but I see italain cypress all the time around here. I havent given the cypress any water in the last 8 days and they still arnt getting better. I was wondering if the once yellow leaves will eventually turn back blue-green when they get better... Thanks

I am definately not an expert as you all are, but I had a yellowing and then black-ing of branches last year on "berkman's gold". Some suspicion was dog's urine, other - too humid - we had lots of rain. One of the things I did is sprinkle magnesium sulfate around the base and work it into the soil. And of course I had to dig down and amend the clay soil with better draining mixture of manure and store bought bag of "trees and shrubs soil". The tree is doing great this year, healthy with new cones.

I am in zone 10 carmel california. Just re potted my monterey cypress from 5 gallon to 15 gallon... they were very dry and extremely root bound. They are 6 to 7 feet tall. I loosened root ball. gave them plenty of water in new pots and they are all turning yellow from the bottom up. Any suggestions why? Did they go into shock? too much water...PLEASE HELP by answering me if you know the answer or have any ideas...I bought 20 trees!!!!!!!!!! thanks donna

agree.. start your own post.. add some pic ... and add all the info left out.. like what media.. did you moisten it before us... where is the transplant now.. i hope in full shade for a month or so ... etc..

you really havent given us any info to work with ...

and BTW ... why repotting in august??? ... why cant you properly water the plants???
