Black Hills Spruce 'Densata' Autopsy

Planted as a 6' tall B&B specimen in September of 2009. Was a new construction home and tree was installed by landscape contractor. I asked them to plant the tree a bit high as we have some pretty tough clay soil. At the time of planting the top of the rootball was probably 3" above grade. Tree seemed to adapt well, put on a touch of new growth in the Spring of 2010. Summer set in and by the end of 2010 the tree was toast. I cut it off a few inches above the ground the following spring and just dug it out today to put soething new in its place.
I was amazed at how deep the root flare was. As i said before, I had the landscape contractor plant the tree high, but the root flare still ended up at least 6" below grade, and probably more like 10".
