hey main first find the latin.. check out the link .. not far down.. you find the latin === Picea glauca 'Conica' conica usuaally means dwarf in conifer-ese .... [they will probably argue with me on that over-generalization .. but they have nothing else to do] so.. it is a dwarf Picea glauca ... picea making it a spruce in common parlance ... and only God and three people here know or care why they add white to it ... are others red ?? blue???? i dont see any white in it ... whats that all about [can you tell i am coming out of my funk???] and glauca being the species ... now.. have you ever seen what you are pondering.. or do you just dream these things up .. lol ... just kidding.. pic below ... do note it has lost the dwarf growth habit of the plant it is on.. and reverting to the normal growth rate of the species ... i like your ponderings.. how about some more.. though the odds i will have a pic are low.. lol ken Here is a link that might be useful: its why we dont prefer common names.. rather than the latin ....

Hi Guys, I'd seen the reference to Picea glauca around the Sam's Point/Ice Caves preserve previously, but it might be erroneous. Here's one mention below. The idea is that the ridgetop caves hold snow and ice well into the spring, creating a cool microclimate. Wikipedia says Picea mariana (more believeable). Ilove, you'd be far better off with your native version of white spruce, of which there must be many in your region. Black Hills' is a real dog of a spruce IMO. the worst possible choice for anyone east of the Big Muddy. Acclimated to dry, Rocky Mountains air, not humid upstate NY. Do as thou silt, but in case it's not obvious, I think very little of this tree, and especially, the way it just won't go away in the landscape trade. Very prone to needlecast diseases. +oM
