OT - Windows 8.1 - A learning experience

I finally upgraded the operating system on my computer since XP will no longer be supported after April. I kept procrastinating to do it and finally got it done last week but trying to navigate the new windows is both fun and frustrating.
I got my Plantstep program reloaded and working and today, I finally learned how to import my Bookmarks so I wouldn't have to type in everything all over again. Phewwww, what a time saver.

Still have to figure out the picture loading part from my camera and Ipad to Faststone on my PC and then upload to Photobucket. I hope I can master this part as well. I think I need to invest in the Windows 8 For Dummies book...if there is such a book LOL.

Still working on how to shutoff all the ads but I think I'm missing Ad Blocking so need to get that installed too.

You have more nerve then I do. I also was forced to upgrade from the wonderful XP this week. After seeing 8.1 I was aghast at how far removed it was from my XP experience. I don't do any outside gadgets, don't even know how to take a picture on my cell phone, so this touchy feeley thing is way out of my league. I located a new computer with Windows 7 available in it, hired a guy to hook it up and am cussing my way through 7 now. I lost my old (but loved and user friendly) photo processing program to boot. Will have to deal with that when picture taking season is upon me....Julia, it sounds like you had at least had enough experience with the touchy gadgets to not be shocked by no mouse (LOL). Here's to all of we non-techy types trying to keep up with the ever changing (and expensive) new technology........Maryl

Oh wow -- yeah I can see how going from XP to 8 would be a big shock. We have 8 on a laptop, and I still haven't figured out how many things work (we only use it to stream music at bedtime most of the time). If you don't have a phone or tablet with touch icons, Windows 8 is just plain weird. At least 7 looks like XP for the most part.

Weather stripping on garage door has been chewed away by mice since last year. Traps all over the garage (my smoking lounge) but they kept licking peanut butter off one of them. Sitting out here using my laptop late at night last week and heard noise from side of garage. Look over and one trap is jumping up and down. I have no problem tossing out dead mouse in trap but when the little thing has one foot caught in trap and looks at me with those desperate little eyes I just couldn't take a shovel to him...LOL. Pried open the trap and let him go outside. Poor little thing didn't know what had just happened to him and ran in circle for a while. Guess I'm a sucker for brown eyes...LOL. If I ever have to chase one inside the house I won't be kind...little mousie would get clobbered with whatever is closest at hand. Not likely I'd be able to get that close to a live mouse but the thought is comforting. Crickets are the biggest problem inside house. My father uses some kind of "human safe" indoor/outdoor spray and there's a mass kill of them left in toward the middle of basement from crickets trying to escape spray along walls. This was only my first year of gardening but boy they can make you escalate to squishing bugs/insects with even bare hands...I was so fed up with eaten foliage I got crazy! Only got "burned" a few times with some beetle that felt like it stung. I lived and he didn't...worth it.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM CALICO CORNERS. Two months ago, I walked into Calico Corners for the first time. I went to the store in Greenbrae, California. I was the only customer in the store at the time. By my count there were at least 4 employees in the store. One employee was actually training another employee, from what I could tell. The store was not very big, so it was no secret that a customer had walked into the store. I walked around the entire store several times. I stopped repeatedly to look at fabrics, trims, etc. I was there for over half an hour. I was never acknowledged by a single employee at that store. Nobody said "hello" let alone "may I help you" or "do you have any questions." Instead, I had the pleasure of listening to two employees standing in the cash register area arguing about whether or not to charge a customer about fabric. I do mean ARGUING. Not discussing. ARGUING. In the middle of the store. In plain sight of anyone in the store. When one of the employees had enough of the argument and huffed away, she walked right past me and didn't even look at me. The other employee then proceeded to recount the argument to a third employee and complain in length about the first employee. Now, I've worked in retail for much of my career, from working in stores during college to working in the corporate headquarters for a major retailer. The calibre of these employees was no better than what I have experienced from teenagers at discount retailers. I certainly expected more from MIDDLE AGED WOMEN in what is supposed to be a REPUTABLE source for interior decorating. Needless to say, I was completely disgusted. I stood by the front door, called my husband and said, in a voice loud enough to be heard to the back of the store, "We will not spend a penny at Calico Corners because they cannot be bothered to acknowledge a customer, as they are too busy arguing amongst themselves." I promptly walked out. I tried to submit this feedback via the Calico Corners website, but I kept getting an error message. Apparently they don't want the feedback. So, please share with their leadership that they missed out on a sale of several thousand dollars. I was planning on buying a sofa, chair and ottoman, as well as having curtains and a window seat made. I have also made it my mission to deter all my friends from shopping there. Thanks!

I own both SketchUp and Punch. Both can import jpeg, Sketchup can import a variety of formats including AutoCad files (dwg, dfx). I stared using Punch before SketchUp was available. Punch is designed for modeling residential construction. I found Punch quick to learn, easy to use and much faster to create simple models. Its limitations show up when you start adding complexity. It really bogs down if you load complex topography. It is the usual trade off between ease of use and flexibility. There are higher end versions to this type of tool, such a Chief Architect, that I expect overcome most of the limitations, but I donÂt have any experience with them. Sketchup is a general purpose modeling tool. I used it to design our home, but I also use to design furniture, fireworks and most anything where I want to communicate an 3 dimenional image. SketchUp required a much greater investment of time to learn the program, but once you do it is amazing. Most manufactures provide 3D models of their products in AutoCad format. Because SketchUp can import AutoCad files you can, for example, download 3D models of sinks from the Kohler web site and place them into your virtual kitchen. Many companies also provide SetchUp components (native SketchUp format) versions of their products, for example Pittsburg Corning provides models of their glass blocks. You can "build" glass block wall in your design and be sure that a contractor can build the same wall in the real world. As I am sure you can tell, I really like SketchUp. If you are going to be doing a lot of design work I think the investment in time to learn it is well worth the time spent.

If you look on the index, where the list of topics is, on the right, just above, and underneath the post a new message area, and right under the GardenWeb has joined Houzz box), you'll see the mode selector. There's a sorting style dropdown menu that let's you choose to sort by latest activity (like on GW), Featured, Popular, and Unanswered. I don't know who or how they determine Featured and Popular, but I bet there's something in there that's making all these old threads pop up! Farther to the right are the three boxes. The leftmost is for the basic index of thread topics, signified by many lines (3 lines). Middle box has two blobs because when you choose that, the entries are thicker. That's the one I was talking about. In the two bars, middle box, "preview" mode, you see the first two lines of the last post on the thread, as well as the last poster's screen name and avatar, and how old the last post is. Plus, the preview of the first picture posted in the OP post. The one solid box, on the far right, gives you the first two lines of the OP post, indented with its picture preview to the left) and the last two replies to it, but with all the threads strung in a row. This is a great way to see if there's anything new in a slow moving forum. It used to show the full threads, I think, but our threads are too long for that. :)

I figured if I have to upgrade, might as well get the latest version. Most of the applications I have run on Windows and if I ever thought to spring for a MAC, I'd have to install windows on it to get the applications to run. Not worth the hassle or cost. I don't know what I did last night but one of the web pages I was viewing went to very small fonts. LOL. Finally figured out how to get the web page back to a larger size.
Yes, going from XP to Win 8.1 is like going from a compact car to a full size car.
I was able to get into Photobucket and view my albums. Still need to do a practice of posting to the forum.

Now I need to take some photos with the camera and load it to FastStone and then upload to Photobucket but not today. Today is a day of rest :-).

Oh yeh, the font size. I have AOL and the font size has shrunk to bottom row eye chart size. My Picture Trails bar to move the photos up and down has disappeared too. And that's moving from XP to Windows 7! I can't imagine what 8 would have done to me.......I hear Windows 9 is due out this year or next. Microsoft seems to be coming up with new ideas every year or two,which in turn calls for dropping support for the "old" systems...............Maryl

I think their "new ideas" are that it's more profitable to release entire new versions that people have to buy than to release updates to existing versions that people can download for free. :D

Nate: I couldn't agree with you more.....I called AOL today with some of my problems and was so pleased that they fixed both of them up without any problems. AOL now has United States customer support (with English as the first language). How wonderful is that just in itself?............Maryl
