When treating nutrient defficiency plants, what do you do?

When treating your citrus for yellowing leaves not due to overwatering,nor lighting problems, but due to nutrition, how do you do it?

Do you feed iron one week, epsom salts another,vinegar another, miracid another and so on, or do you make a concoction of all these ingrediants all at once into a gallon jug, then water in?

Instead of trying to guess what the deffinciency is over period of time, isn't eaiser to make a brew of all the possible nutrition your plant might need at once, feed, then one of these nutional supplements is bound to solve your problem without guessing over weeks of trying different stuff at different times?

I figure, by the time you figure out it was Iron needed and you have tried everything else before you used it, your leaves could of been lost using everything but with all the guessing. Just thinking!!

If using a good fertiliser with all the minors, you shouldnt get a deficiancy, if there is one , the 1st to go for is adding sulphur to the pots, it alters the pH , incorrect pH will give signs of a defficancy.

If you have a tree with a defficiancy, if you spray every night with the normal fertiliser containing the trace elements it normaly corrects itself, spraying the element (apart from iron) seems to work quicker

Most fertilisation problmes look diffrent so you can see which is which, if i guess what it is up, i add extra element to the spray for a few days, or just do an extra spray with just the element needed, both seem to work the same

If it looks like a deficiancy and doesnt correct itself with a program of fertiliser spraying every night, i then add sulphur to the pots to correct pH slowly and keep spraying

adding random extras such as iron sulphate or magnesium or vinegar i just chuck a small amount in the fertiliser bucket evey few months , just incase

mike, I thought that you were using a product with the minor elements in it. Truly, if you are using a decent all purpose fertilizer, and adding a dose of miner (trace) elements occasionally, you should not ever have to worry about adding vinegar, sulphur, or other products that could totally screw up your pH.

Would you like to know how many times in twenty or thirty years I've had to deal with nutrient deficiencies in my container plants? Never.

Hi Kim...Don't be all worried...This thread is not meant for that..:-) It is just to keep our friends well informed and to teach others what to look for and be aware of, and up to us to decide what to do with it.. We just deliver the news and the public choses what they want to do.. If I were you, I would be more worried of not knowing what could possibly cause harm to your plants than to find out too late, possible after throwing a plant away after it's demise the way many I know had to do in the past. Now you are armed with information that will help you stay ahead of the game in case it happens, avoid future problems, and if you should have any problems from not taking precautionary steps, how it could of started, and what to watch for when you do visit places that sell plants or when you receive them from any source.. I would just keep a close eye on them, and if you notice any strange happenings with your plants, check your cultural habits.Be informed about how to care for them as best as you can learning from these forums.. Learn as much as you can about those jades and what keeps them healthy and happy..Visit the Cactus and Succulents forum..There are jade threads galore.. I would defiantly have a magnifying glass available, and this thread at your disposal if your plants should ever encounter the problems associated with pest's spoken of here.. I used to go through all kinds of contortions when I planted a rose...or anything else for that matter. All sorts of expensive composts and additives got mixed in the planting hole. Sometimes they did great and sometimes they didn't. Then I read a report put out by the University of Florida that said that plants adjust best when just planted in the native soil. I've been planting new roses and camellias and I quit ammending the planting hole. I work the soil up nicely, water them well, and lovingly plant them. I add the compost, etc. on top of the soil, as nature would. I've noticed over the years that earth worms are more than willing to bring the good stuff down to where the roots are. I'm having great results with a LOT less work. They seem to be adjusting to their new home much quicker. And it's less expensive, too. I've also switched to pine needles as mulch rather than pine bark, and have much less of a weed issue in my beds. Fortunately, bales of pine needles are harvested in my area, so the price is reasonable. Sandy

Yes, I added bark mulch just before this week of all rain. Maybe it was the combination of the bark mulch and all the rain. Hopefully they will recover. I'll move some bark mulch away to see if it improves. Thanks.

Thanks, Silverwind! That's the kind of answer I was looking for, because it was helpful! (For any moderators reading this, I ignored Risbyhuggins, because of course I'm going to remove dead plants and put somethins else in. If he'd actually had any intention of being helpful he'd have seen that I was looking for advice as to whether I should put more of the same or something else.) I have actually seen a perking-up in the garden since the storms passed and the draining has started. It has pointed out that the snow peas have had it, though! So I'm off to the local garden center to see if they have any snow peas. I'm a bit sad to give up the idea of growing the golden variety, but I can get over it! If I don't see any there, I'm going to try some of the seed I have left. Thank you again!

This you are right. I just wanted to be on the safe side incase my fertilizer does not work for all. In fact, what's weird is that I feed all my plants the same fertilzer that a member here made me with everything neccassary in it.. I think I butchered the word!lol Anyways, and it seems that a couple of trees here and there will still get faded leaves to yellow. Especially a couple in the smaller pots.
I have a small ponderosa lemon all of a sudden with lower leaves turning yellow, the older leaves,the two nearest to soil at the base of trunk, and who knows why, even though I feed them all the same stuff.But this plant is still green the rest of the way up. All my others are so green and healthy. Maybe it could be anything. Even a change in window sill temp.
But my idea was to douse it with a made up gallon of all these things together to see if anything in this mix as a test subject for that plant being a guini pig would take care of the problem. If not, then I figure it could be anything else from winter sun, to a draft, to a skip in watering,or just a natural thing for older leaves to die off, and not fertilization problems since all other trees are so happy.
Do I sound stupid, or should I just not worry?

If only a few lower leaves are yellow, not to worry.

Use an all-round fert according to directions and forget about any fix-it concoctions.
