Yeah, these ought to cover it! Just a taddddd over 50. I've noticed that my mom and I seem to have different tastes then most of you here. We tend to go for the older varieties. When I ordered Smoke scream, that was the most I'd ever spent on a daylily (let's not count the $65 on the goldmine peony last year ;o) ). And pink stripes...that $75 buckaroos! Yikes. I doubt that I'll be spending like this again...I really won't have any more room after this summer. LITERALLY. It's an instant garden. And I know that I'm probably taking my life in my hands, but I really don't like most of the frilly foo foo lillies with the ruffley edges (don't hit me!!!! *ducking*). I'm pretty much a tom boy, so foofy flowers don't fit for me.

The new flowers I do like (and will not spend the dough on) are GET JIGGY and WATER DROPS. BEAUTIFUL!!!!! The colors on all of those intros are amazing!

I love the Flower Factory. Discovered it on the way home from Madison after the AHS Region 2 summer meeting. I'm hoping to talk a friend into going up there this spring.
You have quite a ready made collection to get started with. You'll have a great show this summer.

That is quite the list! On that "I prefer old ones" thing... I am amazed at how my tastes change year to year. There are plenty of beautiful newer cultivars that don't have all the ruffling, but have better color, form etc. The Stamile's have a ton of beauties!! Good luck with that list!

Well I grow Sizaia Ptitsa, Piilu, Duchess of Albany, and Fascination. Royal Velours was just purchased last year from Donahues so it is still in its sleep stage although it has put up a fair amount of foliage this year. Fascination is relatively new for me as well and here are its first blooms and buds this season. I really love Duchess of Albany for its vigor. Here it is this year. Not sure if you can tell but it grows up against the wall, originally climbed the white trellis, but its vines are now sprawled out over the japanese maple and the otto luyken laurel on the right. I love the integrifolias and integrifolia hybrids as well so Sizaia Ptitsa is a great one I would recommend. Although not a huge fan of the type IIs, I must admit that Piilu is a great early season bloomer in my garden. I have posted pictures previously this year of mine and now it is even more covered in blooms than it was previously. As Karen pointed out it tends to be a shorter variety of clematis, but then again I treat mine as a type III clematis (which is why I never get double blooms on it) and this year it was whacked back to ground level and it is still going gangbusters and well over 5 feet tall. I'll reinforce some of the others' suggestion, and maybe change some. If you're looking for the cheapest possible way to create a landscape, try the following: Go to your library and check out some books on garden design. While you're there, get one or two about plant propagation. Read, read, read. Take notes. Plan on paper. Keep in mind when you plan that what you're planning isn't cast in stone. If the yard is completed slowly -- to accomodate your budget -- then you'll have plenty of time to change your mind. And in the end, there's something very satisfying about seeing a plan become a reality. Also, it's not necessary to buy nice paper or colored pencils. Printer paper and crayons work just fine. Or notebook paper (you can draw lines the other direction to make a grid and use the grid to approximate space in your yard so you're not overplanning the space). And if you have a computer, that's even better: I don't know about Macs, but the IBM version of the Windows operating system comes with a very basic program called Paint which works just fine, and you can change the layout to your hearts content without throwing away a scrap of paper. If your soil is heavy, start collecting leaves and plant material scraps *now* and create impromptu compost piles. Get stuff from your neighbors: grass clippings, fallen leaves, trimmings, etc. If your yard is unplanted you have plenty of room to create piles for composted material. With time, patience, a lot of hard work, some indulgence from your neighbors, and a few large and unsightly piles, you can have a decent amount of soil amendment for cheap or free. (Though you may have to compost for as much as a year to generate enough for your purposes). I definitely second the getting-cuttings-from-your-neigbors approach. Or drive (or walk) around town and find plants that really strike your fancy instead of limiting your selections to your neighbor's tastes. And make sure you understand propagation (getting and using cuttings) before you go, not just so that the cuttings survive and thrive, but in case the owner of the plant you lust after takes some convincing because they don't understand propagation and need it explained that what you're after won't damage their plant. For pots to grow cuttings in, yogurt containers work fine, and you can pot up to gallon milk containers when you need to. The things that will be tough to find for cheap or free are the hardscape items. One recomendation I have is for mulch paths (or mulch in general): you can usually get mulch from power companies when they have to cut down brush or trees for maintenance purposes. If you tell them you want the mulch from the next job, they'll make it and drop it free of charge (or exceptionally cheap), though you have to be willing to accept an unknown (usually large) amount and you'll have no control over the timing. If you're worring about getting too much, try making arrangements with your neighbors for taking any excess off your hands. With patience, time and (sometimes huge) effort, you can have a nice landscape for the price of rooting hormone, soil-less sterile mix (for the cuttings) fertilizer, and some hardscape materials. Now, you may not want to go about it in this bare-bones a manner, but I took my suggestions to the extreme just as a reminder that landscapes do not need to be store-bought and expensive. Good luck!

I'm 2/3 set....well, sort of. I'm still working on the hand made item, but I found the cookbook yesterday. Like many of you, I had to get 2 of them, one for myself and one for my partner. I'm still puzzling over the local item. I've found a nice locally produce item, but I'm not sure about shipping it. I'm going to do some more research. I've thought of other things, but Texas is a big state, and I'm not sure if the other side of Texas counts as local. Unfortunately, where I live the primary locally produced products are McMansions. I know I can spend as much as I want, but I'm NOT spending THAT much! LOL. Besides, that would definately be hard to ship! Sally

Hi Kmttsmom, Thank you for being kind. I'm really not trying to get a reaction or hurt anyone and I think I've stated it over and over, but it bears repeating. :) I'm hurt too, and confused at how my estrangement got to the point it did. Years and years of misunderstanding, letting things go when they really should have been talked out then, not feeling like I could say anything because it would be taken the wrong way. So I'm just trying to understand it from a mother's point of view. And it seems like a lot of mothers are defensive (that's ok, they have a right to be, but then they take it as I'm attacking) and words like "spoiled brat" come into the picture. I'm not, nor was I ever, a spoiled brat. I was raised one of the least spoiled people you would ever meet. No electricity, no television, catchment water, no neighbors. No Christmas tree, very few presents for my birthday. My mother never bought me a car, paid for insurance, college, rent, bills, etc. I had to give away my toys to more needy kids time and again. We recycled everything. I moved out at 14 to live with my dad because of her emotional abuse, and I lived pretty much on my own because he had to work 150 miles away and would be gone for days at a time. I walked to school a few miles away and walked home, did my homework, made myself dinner, and went to bed. And I forgave her in high school. I was able to put it all behind me and move forward. And I included her in my daughter's birth. And when she needed a place to live, I let her move in with me. And then I realized she was an energy vampire. She literally sucked me dry, blamed me for everything, took my friends and started to turn my daughter against me. And she walked all over me. Time and again. So, my defenses go up too, when mothers just say that kids just need to respect their parents, and "get over it". It's a very emotionally charged situation. I didn't come on here for support, I came on here to learn what others think. So I think part of the conflict is our approach to what we expect from this board. I'm shocked at being told to go away, that my opinion is not wanted or needed or valued because I don't agree and I'm asking questions. It seems it's either one way or the highway. And when I apply this to what women here are saying about their damaged relationships the correlation seems too blatant to ignore. I don't think anyone here is a "Bad Mother". The fact that people are even talking about it indicates that they are truly trying to be good people. I'm sure everyone on here has their good and bad moments, and it can be hard to judge emotion when it's in writing, without any facial gestures or other non-verbal clues. I guess this isn't the place for me to be asking my questions because it is seen as an attack, and I felt just terrible the past few days, because I feel bad that people are taking my words that way, and now I feel attacked too. Yes I know just about where you are located.
I've ordered from Plum Hill gardens several times, and highly recommend them. They send great fans with HUGE roots!(Something you don't always see from the northern growers.)

I'm one that often purchases some of the older "tried and true" varieties, especially the ones that have received awards. Click here for descriptions of awards. I'm trying to collect as many as I can through the years.

Just a word about 'Give Me Eight'...That one is supposed to be a polytepal, but has never polytepaled for me...rather disappointing.

About Give me eight...I hope it does polypetal. BUt if it doesn't, that's okay. I'm trying to find whiter big flowers that aren't a billion dollars!

My Joan Senior is so beautiful that I wanted to find more white-ish lilies...

Yeah, my mom and I will sometimes go to Flower Factory just to look...not even to buy anything!!!! And we've been to Plum hill 2 years in a row...they are great people. Plants are amazing from them. I had just e-mailed her too for her new price list! YIKES!

As for right now, some of the grass has to stay. I have a big sideyard for that, though. I have a 4 month old and a 2 year old (both BOYS...help me!) that will need room to tear it up. I told daddy that the side yard it theirs...the rest is MINE! He doesn't really care if I buy flowers, as long as they don't go into his "baseball field". We will see about that....HEHEHHEEH!

Okay, I need to find this Plum Hill place. Sounds interesting.
I'm wondering how you go to Flower Factory and not buy. When we went, we had a chocked full minivan and managed to buy 2 or 3 wagons full and got it all in the van. Of course, no one had any room for their feet and I think my mom was holding a pot or 2 on her lap. All our luggage was lashed on top of the van. We sure had fun.

My goal this summer is to prepare another bed among some widely spaced shrubs in our west lawn. Put down newspapers (10 sheets thick), top w/4" compost/wood chips, let everything settle for a season, then plant to my heart's content. This area could easily hold a couple hundred new daylilies.
