What do the leaves and cones (if any) look like? Sizes? Shapes? Colors? To get right to what you want to find out you'll need either a good description or good pictures. If you can come up with some shots that really show what it looks like you may then find out immediately exactly what it is. Pictures of both overall shape of tree as well as close-up views of various parts may be required. One without the other is often not adequate to get positive identifications here.

Keep in mind that if it is something raised from seed different individuals may vary (site conditions also affect development) so that ones you buy although belonging to the same species may not produce quite the same habit.

A little geography would help too.

Thanks for the information. I've been looking at photos of Deodar Cedar Cedrus deodara and it looks very similiar, but the specs dont show it is hardy in zone 5.

The photo was taken in my town (zone 5), so I know the tree (whatever it is) will survive here. I've seen a few around town. Ken, you're right it could be in a microclimate but I really doubt it. Other than the house, theres no protection.

I'm suspecting a mix-up between USDA zone 5 (eastern WA: Spokane area) and Sunset zone 5 (western WA: Seattle, Puget Sound area). The two different zone systems often get confused, even though they are very different from each other. Appreciate your wish for privacy, but location is important information. Can you say at least if you are west, or east of the Cascades, please!

This is the commonly seen scarecrow-habit Deodar cedar sold as weeping blue Cedar-of-Lebanon or simply weeping Cedar-of-Lebanon. Small specimens at outlets may have few branches and resemble weeping Sierra redwood in this respect. You will always see it labeled as a Cedar-of-Lebanon cultivar at nurseries even though it is clearly a Deodar cedar. The 'Repandens' cultivar of Deodar cedar is also traded as a Cedar-of-Lebanon cultivar, under multiple names including 'Beacon Hill'. And there is also a third one seen repeatedly here, often similar to 'Repandens' in foliage but with steel blue needles. The arboretum at South Seattle Community College has this labeled weeping blue Cedar-of-Lebanon; I may have encountered it offered for sale simply as weeping Cedar-of-Lebanon.

The new Timber Press conifer book shows a picture of the form you are asking about captioned Cedrus deodara 'Libani Pendula', without explanation. Apparently the author or a source used by the writer has recognized that the cultivar is actually a Deodar cedar and coined the above name.

I'm in Eastern washington, on the cold, snowy, side. It can get down to -20 or colder. The summers, however, are hot and sunny, unlike the rainy Seattle side.

Bummer... I may have to knock on some doors to get a definite ID on this one.

Anyone who comes to the door and happens to know or remember what the tree was bought as will tell you - wrongly - that it is a weeping blue Cedar-of-Lebanon, weeping Cedar-of-Lebanon or just Cedar-of-Lebanon.
