Which daylilies attract hummingbirds

I can't wait to order several daylily plants, but would like to make sure that a few of them will be enticing to hummingbirds.

If you have an evergreen daylily that seems to attract more hummingbirds, please let me know.

I would appreciate it very much!

P.S. I look forward to being a member of this group. I had about 50 varieties years ago at a previous house that we lived in, but due to circumstances, I only have about ten plants right now.

I've seen hummers look at my daylilies, usually the red ones, but don't recall ever seeing them feed on them. The large swallowtail butterflies feed on them sometimes, but usually when not much else is available. Clethra, hamelia or salvia would be better choices for hummers. Save the daylilies for the people!

Welcome Jo! Glad you joined us.I have lots of Hummingbirds and Daylilies too,but the hummers are not attracted to the daylilies for feeding as they are not nectory(? lol) enough.I use Wave Petunias and Million Bells in the garden for them to feed on.

rsenor Im guessing that in the summer your temps sometimes reach triple digits maybe often. Hummer nectar can spoil rather quickly in that kind of heat and it is said hummers will not eat it as so. If the mix looks cloudy change it. The usual hummer nectar mix 1-4 sugar to water. Also yes I would imagine migration would be a longer season for you and you should have hummers at least into sept. Also some good hummer attracting plants are : salvia coccinea -- lady in red, coral nymph , subrotunda salvia guaranitica-- black and blue lobelia cardinalis-- cardinal flower cuphea-- david verity, shumannii bee balm agastache--- rupestris, tutti frutti I mention these just to name a few hummer staples , there are many more that attract hummers.

I have to change my feeders at least every 3 days. More often if they are in sun. Keep the feeders very very clean. Mine will develop mold in them if the syrup isn't changed often enough. Sometimes when its hot and humid even changing them at 3 days they have still gone bad. Have several types of flowers for them to chose from as well. They'll prefer different ones at different times. I spread my feeders all around the house. I have 8 of them. It makes it easier to attract lots of hummers if they're chasing each other all over the place and they can't see all the feeders at once from one spot. Be consistent with fresh nectar. You won't have a herd of them over night, but next year there will be a few more, and each year after you'll have more and more. If possible, provide some shaded cover for them, trees and shrubs to sit in while guarding their turf. Good luck!

I'm not surprised that your jewelweed is surviving, Deanna. It's a prolific re-seeder! I have no qualms about pulling up clumps of it that are growing where I don't want them to grow. I know they'll be back! On edit: You have small children, if I remember correctly. When jewelweed goes to seed, it's an unending amusement to little kids to squeeze the swollen seed pods and watch them explode! (Hahaha, and I must admit I still get a kick out of it!) Hence jewelweed's second name "touch-me-not." I should mention that invasive honeysuckle bushes are great pollinator attractions, hummingbirds among them. Most people wouldn't willingly allow it to grow, and I have battled it in a few places where I don't want it. But I welcome it in the unmowed areas that I am re-foresting because I know that eventually the trees will take over. In the meantime it is a fast growing provider of cover/privacy/screening and a boon to the wildlife.

mr1010, the white cestrum is sometimes called "Day Blooming Jasmine" Almost Eden has it as hardy as low as 8b. Regarding the coral porterweed. It gets very big--maybe ten feet tall in a year or so if you give it a lot of water, sun and fertilizer. I no longer grow this porterweed. The hummers really liked it, but it only bloomed twice for me on a yearly basis (perhaps a total of two months) and it really took up a lot of space. The S. Frantzii (purple) and the lavender porterweed, on the other hand, never stop blooming and aren't so huge. Almost Eden also sells another one (Henlea's) that is about the same color as the lavender but doesn't get as tall--it is ever-blooming also.

If you want to attract hummingbirds add a clump of Monarda. They love the red and purple varieties. We have "Jacob Klein".

I agree with Edward -- my hummingbirds appear to like the looks of daylilies, but I never see them feed there. I have bee balm planted among my daylilies in the garden closest to the house so I can watch the hummers. The monarda blooms at the same time as most of my daylilies and look great together. It's easy to pull out the excess once it gets going. I have about ten varieties, but anything in the red or pink group seems to attract the hummers most.

I have seen them check out Daylilys but never feed on them. I put up feeders, and plant a variety of flowers for them. I alway have a standard fuchia, and we have a hummingbird vine that really attracts them. Along the driveway in the back we have about 30 feet of Rose Of Sharon hibiscus they also use. Bee Balm or Monarda works well except it kept getting powdery mildew here s I removed it.

Put some glads in with your daylilies if you want to see some hummers because I can't recall ever seeing them give daylilies more than a passing glance....

Hummingbirds also like blue flowers. I use Salvia
guaranitica "Black and Blue". It grows quite large and has a great many gorgeous blue flowers.

In the northern areas, it is an annual. I've never seen seeds for it so I just buy 2 or 3 plants for accents. I
tried to overwinter a plant in my greenhouse, didn't work.
They do stay nice until there is a HARD frost.

They also like penstemon and agastache, and I've seen them feed from phlox, lobelia, fuschia, just for starters.

I think hummers are attracted to daylilies by the bright colors but can't reach the nectaries, which are in the ovary, because of the size of the flowers. I find they love hostas.

Thanks, folks! I have several plants for hummers, but just thought I might find some daylilies that did double duty - feed them and please me. :)

So many books say hummers are attracted to daylilies. Weird.

Oh....I love the black and blue salvia. It's been a real winner in my garden. Pleasing to everyone - including the bees.
