Huernia seed pod question

Can anyone tell me about how long it takes for a Huernia quinta seed pod to ripen and is this largest pod full size? It's at least 3 months since I first noticed it. This is the first time I've had a pod last on any of my huernias or stapelias. I don't have a ruler so I used a pencil for size comparison. BTW that is an evil mealybug on the pod. It's a constant battle once they come inside or even in the greenhouse for the winter. TIA

Yes, the seed horn set looks like it's full-size, and congrats to you for it - the right pollinator at the right time. I'd say another week, maybe three....it's hard to say. If the pod itself turns a purple throughout I'd guess it's in imminent happiness of opening, releasing the hundreds/thousands of seeds with their diaphanous wings. Seeing them disperse in a gentle wind is a sight to see.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll cover it with something to catch the seeds soon. Definitely don't want them floating thru the house. lol

Hi. Mike (from the hoya forum) gave me the answer. He said that these can be stored quite a long time in proper conditions before losing viability. I was wondering because I knew that hoyas had a short viability and thought the same might be true for huernias.

Boy do I wish my would form a seed pod. I have grown them from seed several times. And they cross with almost all stapidias. Mine is very simular to yours except being darker. It was supose to be on the lighter side. Clsoer to Orbea then Huernia. Mine is Duvalia sulcata ssp. Seminude. I love the look of the stems. Light green with deep red lines thou out it. It had a bloom on it when I purchased it and now again. I hit the jack pot on this one. Stush

Brugmansia seed pod question

I asked this on the Brugmansia forum, but it's pretty dead over there. I know we have some brug growers that pop in here from time to time. I have three brugs, all grown from cuttings from the same plant, all NOID pink suaveolens (look a lot like Frosty Pink). They are all planted in a row. The other day, I realized that two of my bloom stems had not fallen off, and now there seem to be seed pods growing. I live in an area with lots of apartment complexes, and have never seen a brug anywhere in this neighborhood (which doesn't mean there aren't any). I have always been told that you need two varieties to cross-pollinate, but here I am with seed pods, seemingly from one variety, just different plants. There are pods on two of the bushes. So I know that most of them will be white, which is o.k., since I don't have a white one, but how could this happen?

I know nothing about this, hopefully you'l get good info from the experts on this board. I did want to mention that I have found excellent, in depth, seed growing info on the BCSS board, British Cactus and Succulent Society, http://forum.bcss.org.uk/index.php. There are some super long detailed threads on growing from seed. Good luck and let usknow if you;re successful, I love stapeliads, sp? but haven;t been willing to budget for them yet! Growing from seed would be awesome!

Pieces of stocking have been used with great effect, but it's hard to find anyone wearing them anymore - I know I don't.

Another method is to wrap each horn with small-gauge wire.

I use pieces of stockings. There really is a use for them after they get a run.

JH, there are two sets of horns, but both asymmetrical i.e. one well and one hardly developed horn on each. The seed count maybe about 100, but not 1000.
And another method to keep the seeds in the drying and opening pod is to put just one ring of scotch tape tight around the horn.

I used the scotch tape metod, they releave more or less like a Dandylion, a tiny parachute the seed on the end about the size of lettuce seeds or smaller. I'ts fun to watch and wait. How long, well again it depends on how dry the air is where it is growing. Watering may also make a difference on how fast the fruit will open. this I don't know. I have very tiny rubber bands which I have alsod use to keep them closed. I have put the plant into a strainer, and then put it into a bag so when they start to open they will fall down into the strainer, which is in the bag or box. You will come up with something that will work for you. Norma
