How important is it to have drainage holes in a cactus dish?

I'm looking for a dish for a cactus garden, about 9 inches across and 3 in. deep. I found something at a nursery yesterday, kinda deep, 5 in, i'm thinking of going back and getting it.
It has a drainage hole with a stopper in it.
the nursery guy said I could grow cacti without a drainage hole.
I am so fixed on having drainage holes. but then I never grew cacti before.
I know we don't water them much, but still I would think drainage is important.
And I think it would depend on the pot material. I like clay for my cacti (altho not for anything else bec. they dry out too fast). This pot that I was looking at is not clay, some kind of poly...

what are your thoughts?
