fairy castle cactus DYING rapidly

I have a very large fairy castle cactus (at least I think that's what it is)--it's comprised of three stems(probably separate plants, between 4 feet and 6 feet tall. The other day I noticed that one of the stems had turned brown and shrunken at the top half. Within a few days, the condition had spread almost to the bottom--it's as if something had sucked the life out of it. I've now noticed some spotting on an adjacent stem.

I don't think it's overwatering--I give it maybe a quart every 2 months (this thing is in a big pot) I don't think it's in ideal light conditions--reflected north light(at best). Why the sudden demise and how should I treat the remaining stems?
