Dahlia boy~ I may have to draw my imaginary sword if you got the last of King Salmon! I found it, I found it, and I'm on my way to get one. Plantlady, I love your quail. The most exotic birds we see here are herons over or in the creek, and banded pigeons. Could your 'fat birds' be gray/black with obvious orange marks and chests? Possibly Varied Thrushes? Dahlias in time for June 28 wedding

Unfortunately I didn't keep a daily record last year, but by June 19th, here in Zone 5A, I had Mary Jo, China Doll, and Park Princess in bloom. I did, however, start them indoors on March 5th. So that was more than 3 months until bloom time. So, if you got them right away, got them started indoors, and kept them inside in pots until you were absolutely sure there'd be no outside frost, you could probably make it with some early blooming varieties. Of those I considered (which I have the data for on-hand), here are a few named choices that are stated as being early bloomers: China Doll (Cream and Rose) Firepot (Orange & Yellow) Neon Splendor (Flame Orange) Smarty Pants (Red) Mary Jo (Salmon) Touche' (Salmon) Tahiti Sunrise (Yellow & Rose Red) I'm sure there are lots of others that bloom early. By the way, if you start them in 10" plastic pots, you could leave them in there until after the wedding yet still "plant" them outside in garden beds. Just dig a hole about half as deep as the pot and sit the pot in the hole. This would be a variation on pot tubers, but it would avoid the possibility that the stems break from the tubers while trying to transplant them. They should all grow perfectly fine in the pots through to the end of the season. Cheers, Russ

veilchen, Congratulations, what a wonderful compliment your friends have paid you and I am sure it is well deserved. As you have already stated it is a difficult time in the garden, summer blooms are beginning to fade and yet it is too early for a fall display. I too was going to add to some of the terrific late flowering suggestions above until I came across the two following photo's taken on September 5th, 2006 in a neighboring town. One of the things that I find striking about these two different shop front plantings is the first photo depends on foliage of house plants and annuals for color, form, and texture, and even this late in the season it looks fresh, well balanced, and full of color. These colors for a wedding are all wrong but that certainly could be modified. This second photo, again taken on September 5, 2006 I think shows a well tended display of annuals at the end of their season. The shortening of daylight hours certainly seems to effect the exuberance of bloom. Best of luck and I am sure what ever you choose it will be a wonderful day. kt

Michelle 16 - no prob! We pulled the plug today and decided on the Black Pearl!!! Your comments helped us to finally decide - thanks! would still love to see picts thought whenever! We went w/ a taupe/beige coping and a beige-ish tile w/ a dark brown/shimmery trim around each 6x6 piece. Have a new discussion going and will keep adding pictures. Think it's called New pool - picts/progress. We are going into week 4 of digging :( lots of rock and not enough room for a back hoe to fit. Hopefully we'll have a pool in time for a Labor Day party!! Thanks!

Pitimpinai- It's not too hard to part with them when you have about 50,000 blooms out there right now- I'd rather use them for weddings than deadhead & throw them out. Most weren't good enough for seed parents either-- so... the wedding lucked out!

I don't think dahlias ship well- esp. AA sized ones but you might find a local grower who has some that you could buy. Look on the Colorado Dahlia Society site for a grower near you & give them a call.

Goodness, hey are gorgeous! And huge!

My daughter's name is Dalya (same sounding, different spelling) and she's only 4 yo, but, maybe, by the time she gets married, I'll be able to fill her wedding with these beauties!
I need to start growing them right now!!!
