Calibanus? Beaucarnea? Seeking ID? from a description.

I saw something labelled as a Ponytail Palm in one of the garden centers around here today. It didn't look exactly like a typical Beaucarnea recurvata to me, though.

1. The codex was about six-eight inches across, and maybe two or three inches tall.

2. The plant had several branches, but no clear sign of pruning.

3. The branches were no more than an inch or two long, and it had a lot of dead (not recently dead, old and scarred over) branch knobs.

In short, the caudex looked like a Calibanus hookerii caudex. Except the foliage look like a Beaucarnea recurvata's foliage, although maybe a little more narrow. I'm leaning to it maybe being some weird B. recurvata cultivar/mutant.

Sorry I couldn't take a picture. Not looking for an exact ID -- just some suggestions as to what it might've been.
