desperately seeking shrubs....

Please help...so many to choose from, so little experience.

I'm planning on putting a few shrubs on the other side of the walkway leading to the front door (in between the front lawn and the front walk) and interplant them with perennials.

I would say there is about 10 - 12 ft of linear space and I have room to stagger them a little.

Because of the location they have to be very low growing, so as to not block the view of the shrubs etc. next to the house.

They also need to be fairly drought resistant, since I have very sandy soil and summers are hot.

Exposure is east, with direct sun from about 10am to 2pm, after which the house is shading.

And since this is the front of the house and we don't get a lot of snow, winter interest is probably a good idea. So if not evergreen, berries, bark or form is important.

Can anyone tell me some shrubs that might fit this description?....and what shrubs look good together?

I'm having a very tough time with this.

Thanks again and again.
