I just want to add my 2 cents worth on what a great time I had. The opportunity of getting to meet some of the Citrus forum regulars was just a special treat for me! The seafood supper at Gilligans with 20 comfirmed " citruholics" was the highlight of the Expo. Special thanks to Patty, Joe and Bob for flying in for the event. I hope it was at least half as good an event as you expected. Things went very smoothly and the weather couldnt have been better! Its a good thing the Expo wasnt scheduled for today.. Its a washout with this being the first heavy rain we've seen in a long, long time. Scott and Cactus, It was great meeting you guys as well. Hope to see all of you next year in Virginia Beach. There is a guy up there with a great citrus collection, growing in ground.... some of the trees are probably 20 footers. I hope the planning committee puts his place on the agenda for a walking tour! Like I mentioned, I purchased these at Pungo Palms in Virginia Beach. According to their website... 'Several years ago I read an article on a hardy citrus tree and became amazed at the thought of growing my own citrus. I located a nursery in Washington state, and ordered the hardiest of all the species, no matter what they tasted like. After several years of trial and error we have grown several hardy trees. Along the way I met Dr. Motyka who had been growing hardy citrus for years with his help we have added more varieties to our collection. Some of the trees have a pleasant taste and we are always searching for more varieties. Several members of The Southeast Palm Society also grow hardy citrus. The Palm society has an annual expo called the ' Hardy Citrus Expo' At the expo we discuss new progress with hardy citrus, new varieties, and plants can be purchased from several members who grow them.' Thanks Jim! Have you seen any of the palms in the area? How close to the Atlantic are you? I have Butia bonnetti (in pic) and Butia eriospatha. Eriospatha has done really well: much better than the bonnetti. The Sabal minor has doubled in size since last year. Not many leaves come out but each one is much bigger than the last. I've purchased palms from Gary's Nursey, Chilly Palm, Triple Oaks, Bethany Beach Gardens (I think thats the name of the nursey), and three different sellers on Ebay. The nursery in Bethany had huge Trachycarpus fortunei and Butia capitata along with Sabal minor, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, and Chamaerops humilus. My little Clem-Yuz tree (Ten Degree Tangerine) had a hard time and suffered some fairly severe damage going through the 2018-2019 Winter - specifically in early February - which was a colder winter with much more snow than usual for the area. (Olympia, WA, climate zone 8a, many of my other hardy citrus like Yuzu pulled through fine with only minor damage) The tree lost all its leaves. It tried to sprout new leaf bud growth two or three times, but each time failed. So it went the entire year without any leaves. But the trunk and branches still appeared a healthy color of green, although there were a lot of grey dead streaks -damage areas - on the little branches. This year however (2020) it appears that the little plant was finally able to send out some leaf growth from one spot on one of the little branches. Right now there are 6 little very small leaflets emerging from one point, each little leaflet is only about 1 or 2cm long right now. This is a good sign. Kind of amazing that the tree was able to go a whole year without being able to put out leaf growth (since it was reeling from the winter damage), and then the next year puts out signs of life. It is obvious to me however that the Clem-Yuz (Ten Degree) is not as cold hardy as Yuzu. My Changsha mandarin also pulled through just fine this winter, even keeping all its leaves, but it did not go through the previous (2018-2019 winter).
