Citrus Tree Dropped Leaves
Comments (10)Knocking the root ball loose is nothing to worry about. Despite the fact that citrus can take a bare rooting even, I am going to say that the repot is not the issue, but something else. I am going to assume that you did not keep it out of the sun for a few days? When transplanting into an entirely different mix, it is always good to knock the root ball loose and preferably rid of all the old mix unless potting up when then you can slice wedges from the root ball to allow new roots to take in the new mix. Making sure that your root ball is evenly moist with the rest of the mix, keeping it in a much smaller container than the one you potted in, that is unless you potted in a gritty mix, and keeping it sheltered from the sun for a few days should do wonders:-) Mike...See MoreDropping Leaves & Tiny Flies: Citrus Problems in the Midwest
Comments (9)I agree with Mike. Fungus gnats are attracted to peaty, organic mixes that hold a lot of moisture. The immediate solution is to use Bt, a safe, organic bacterial insecticide that kills their larva in your soil. You can use something like Gnatrol or even mosquito dunks soaked in water to drench the soil a couple times and they will be gone. You should know that they don't really cause serious problems for adult plants, but they are a sign that your soil is not the best. So, the long term solution is to repot your citrus into a container mix that doesn't provide the environment they love. Many people here, including me, like a bark-based soil. You could wait to do that until spring, but start allowing the soil to dry out more -- at least in the top couple inches -- between watering. Use a chemical fertilizer instead of organic amendments, since those attract fungus gnats too. Otherwise, it sounds like both of your plants are doing much better since you increased the light. I keep my key lime under lights 16 hours a day. More hours of light might help your plants. I wouldn't worry about the Meyer lemon producing flowers first. It's alive, if under stress, and will grow leaves soon if it's happy....See MoreHelp! Citrus tree dropping yellow leaves and some twig dieback.
Comments (3)Gorgeous tree. A little leaf drop is common in the winter for container citrus kept indoors. This is particularly likely in northern regions. You can read into Winter Leaf Drop to learn more....See MoreAll my citrus leaves turning yellow and dropping
Comments (15)Tropicofcancer, ok would horticultural oil have the same effect as the 3 in 1 organocide? You say its lighter so can that possibly mean less damage on the pests and they can possibly survive it? Also when you say alcohol, is it rubbing alcohol? I used a cylindrical tupperware and filled it with fir reptibark 5 times and then dumped in trash bag, then filled with sphagnum peat moss once then dumped in trash bag, then filled with perlite once then dumped in trash bag, then applied one teaspoon?(I forgot how much) garden lime and then mixed it all up in the trash bag. I repeated this same exact process until it filled the pot up where the citrus went in. During spring and summer I watered about once a week. I check the soil moisture by sticking my finger in as deep as I can and only water if its dry. It had super rocket fast drainage so no issues there. I am 100% sure I used the right dosage for it. It happened about 2 weeks after I sprayed it though. I don't have a greenhouse. I only sprayed this on my 3 citrus and thats it. I also sprayed it on my sedum which is planted outdoors. No problems there. What is safers soap?...See Moremeyermike_1micha
